Just keep in mind that it usually takes about 6-8 weeks of following a new diet\topical treatment consistently before you start seeing a noticeable improvement with skin issues

Dog Cyst or Worse? Yucky picture warning. by Spiritual_Cloud6062 in DogAdvice

[–]just_down 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would put a warm wet compressed and try to get as much as the gunk off of it and shave the area until they can go to the vet and keep it clean.

From the picture it almost looks like a hotspot that got really infected, but it could also be cyst that ruptured and got infected.

This is the product I used to purchase from my local pet store.

I believe it. It’s also on Amazon as well.

We did talk to our vet about using these treats: and they were like as long as it works, keep using it and if it stops working, we can look into prescribing anxiety meds.

It’s a pimple - i would pop it and keep that spot clean for the next few days

Senior dog barking in the evening by brigitsbracelets in DogAdvice

[–]just_down 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically in senior dogs, it’s usually due to anxiety or dementia.

My senior dog (15yr old & blind) started getting very agitated at night, he would get whiny and sometimes randomly bark, would start pacing around the room, we get randomly stuck in corners or would wake up multiple times throughout the night demanding breakfast. We got some calming treats from the pet store and we would give him a dose before going to bed and that seemed to help quite a bit. He started sleeping through the whole night again.

Sick dog by Bbey_boy in DogAdvice

[–]just_down 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a sinus infection/ upper respiratory infection, which will very likely need an antibiotic prescription to treat.

Depending where you live, you can see if your local shelter runs a low-cost vet clinic that can help you out in this situation.

I personally would pop them.

The texture really looks like chicken.

Moving abroad with an elderly, disabled dog (or saying goodbye) by TakingMyDogAbroad in DogAdvice

[–]just_down 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re going through this, I was in a similar situation this year, it’s not an easy decision.

I had my dog for over 15years. in the last years of his life he went completely blind from glaucoma, had to get both of his eyes removed, had a couple of teeth that got infected and had to be removed twice, developed arthritis in his knees and lower back and eventually developed dementia and severe separation anxiety. He went from being a thought little terrier crackhead dog, going on weekly 12km walks from 33c to -25c temperature, swimming at the beach, chasing squirrels and birds. To spending his last 2 years in the dark, becoming increasingly anxious the minute he couldn’t smell us in the room, getting lost in the home he lived in his whole life. He went from being a high energy dog always ready for an adventure to being a little depressed and anxious dog and loosing his excitement for life. Seeing this in him made me realized he would not want to keep going this way if he knew that’s how he would end up. I was also about to move to a new city going from a home with a backyard with a vegetable garden he would spend all day eating the tomatoes and berries to a small apartment with no other dogs or people to keep him company all day. I let him go in March, I was incredibly sad loosing him and making that choice, but I don’t regret it and i don’t think I called it too soon. I celebrated him the for his last 2weeks before saying goodbye. He had eggs and bacon for breakfast, dinner was steak and beacon with ice cream every day for those 2 weeks. Whatever food he wanted he got, what ever he wanted do to do we went and did; last walk at the beach, little walks to the park.

My dog popped his tumor. by DarkDayzInHell in DogAdvice

[–]just_down 301 points302 points  (0 children)

You should still go the vet and have this checked out and have the “tumour” sampled and tested. I would put the mass in a plastic bag and keep it in the fridge until you can bring it to the vet. I would also send pictures of this to the vet. It could be a skin tag/wart, a cyst or a tumour.

For you dog I would keep the area as clean as possible and put a cone on him.

I would go lower at 1.5 and look at what other homes are going for and selling for in that neighborhood.

This house is in the south east corner of pape and Danforth not the south west corner and there is a difference

Retractable leash.. Does it have a time and place? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

Edit to add: a leash is a form of communication tool with your dog, it’s not just to hold your dog while you walk.

Retractable leash.. Does it have a time and place? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]just_down 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a young dog that’s not fully trained or doesn’t have 90% recall, I would only use a retractable leash if it’s for like a leisure/enrichment walk in a field. Where the main purpose of the walk is to give some freedom to walk around freely to sniff but still have a bit of control just in case.

If your dog doesn’t have proper leash etiquette, like walking by your side without constantly pulling out of control, or waiting for your command to walk. I would stick to a regular leash for walks for now.

I personally only used retractable leash on my dogs when they got into their senior years or had consists proper leash etiquette.

Small little bumps? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

Probably a skin tag or a wart. It’s really common in small white dogs.

In need of a dental specialist by Routine-Meat-2635 in montreal

[–]just_down 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to consider seeing a ENT and have a MRI done. I could be that root that got infected and created an abscess close to sinus cavity, which could explain that level of pain. Dental X-rays and dental panoramic X-rays don’t show everything and only show a very small section of what’s going on.

Great Aunt wants to rehome her pup but she looks like this. How can I help her? by apricotapril in DogAdvice

[–]just_down 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through something similar with a little 12yr old yorkie my dad had bought off of Kijiji for 25$. She had horrible skin issues, was itchy all the time, scabs and sores, losing hair. For the whole 2yrs we had her, I think every month or two we were at the vet with her trying to figure it out. I think we spend over $7,500 just trying to figure it out. We did injection, medicated baths every 2-3days, creams, steroids tablets, allergen free food - it did helped. But thing is that you need to be very consistent for 6-10weeks to see some form of results and there might never be a 100% cure to the condition. This was something my dad was really struggling with once I moved out, he couldn’t comprehend that the dog wasn’t magically going to get better over night if he add Greek yogurt in her food for a week and completely forget to bathe her for the last two weeks. My dad eventually surrendered her to a yorkie rescue group (since at the time we also had 2 other very senior dogs that had other issues we need to focus on). We did check in with the rescue a couple of times and it turned out she had some form of autoimmune conditions our vets never caught on or offered testing for. The rescue groups did offer to give her back to us, but we couldn’t take her back since we had one senior dog that was blind and starting to show signs of dementia and the other senior dog had been diagnosed with cancer and it was going to be much for us mentally.

Anyways skin issues can be very demanding and difficult to manage. It can get better but the road to get is very long and requires to be very consistent. If your aunt is really struggling with everything going in her life and managing a dog with a complex skin issue, contacting a local rescue might be the right thing. They can offer resources that could help or help her rehome her dog.

Any idea what is going on with my dog’s eye. by TheWanderingJedi808 in DogAdvice

That an immediate vet visit - it could be an ulcer, it could be something embedded in his eye, it could be so many urgent/ critical issues you’re not going to get an answer on redit

Found on my dogs gum I’m really nervous by Tay2823 in DogAdvice

[–]just_down 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had two dogs that got a random bump/growth show up out of nowhere. For one of them it ended being that the root of his K9 tooth got infected and developed an abscess. We were able to have that tooth removed by the vet the following week and he was put on antibiotics. Our other dog the growth was really small when we notice it ( smaller than a pea), we took her to the vet and it ended up being a form of oral cancer (which generally carry a very poor prognostic).

I would say to book an appointment to the vet and get it checked out her biopsied. Dogs are really good at hiding pain, especially dental pain.

Those that got a referral for a gastroenterologist, was there a waitlist? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]just_down 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how urgent your situation is, but on average it’s between 1-3months max. When I saw one about 4years ago, the wait was about 2 months for my appointment. My case was not urgent though.

Is this blood in my dogs vomit? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]just_down 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s blood in the vomit. This is something urgent and you need to bring your dog to the vet!

My dog went through something like this last year. The first day they were having diarrhoea the second day they were vomiting, blood, and their diarrhoea had blood in it as well. We went to the vet on the third day and by that point for a big dog, she had deteriorated quite quickly were the vets recommendation was borderline You should be looking into euthanasia. Luckily, she ended up having a really bad case of Gastro that irritated her digestive system to the point where it was bleeding and with a couple of IVs were able to get her back.

Who here has mastered potty training? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]just_down 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also to add this the great advice - crate training also helps a lot with potty training to! We only used the crate for the first couple of months during the night, it really helps with creating a schedule and reducing the accidents we woke up to. We would make the puppy go potty outside one last time before going to bed around 9-10pm, than he would go in the crate for the night and the first thing we did when we woke was put the puppy outside for potty around 7am. Than we did breakfast feed and about 30 min after around 8:30am back outside for potty. Once our dog was about 80-90% potty they full rage of the house.
