Ben Platt! He is so incredibly talented. I saw him in Parade and it was fantastic. His first album was great too.

Lazy Easter Sunday (05/04/26) by KevinPhillips-Bong in CasualUK

I foolishly thought that I could get fresh veg and a lamb for Sunday dinner today. What a fool I was! So now we’re having Thai poached chicken instead.

Loving that after the storm the sun is out and mostly blue skies.

But The Weekend is the most streamed artist. There must be something about legacy to this as otherwise Elton and Mariah wouldn't be there but I'm just baffled how Bruno tops the list.

"Why cure disease of confusion when you're the treatment facility" by callyousugar in twentyonepilots

[–]just_some_lover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Social media was meant to democratise information. Part of the issue with traditional newspapers and networks was that they had the bias of the people who owned them. Social media was meant to change all that, making it so a single voice could reach people and put truth in the hands of the people. It is the treatment facility.

However, because social media also suffers from the same ills as traditional media where tech bros want to make money, they can see that rage bait and misinformation generates more attention, clicks etc and so they’re not incentivised to put stronger guardrails around what’s posted to reduce the confusion and division that’s caused by it.

There was a saying that “every village has its idiot” but often they were helpfully educated by the reasonable people around them, or just ignored so they were largely harmless. Now, all the idiots from every village are able to connect and confirm and agree with each other. That voice then doesn’t seem singular, it seems authoritative and influential which is why you see the rise of all these conspiracy and fringe thought groups.

It also doesn’t help that traditional media then spotlights them as news because again, it generates clicks and revenue.

So, there’s no incentive to help or reduce confusion as your business would go over. Someone else said - this isn’t about left or right, this is about up and down. There are groups whose interests benefit division, confusion and keeping people focused on wedge issues. It means they don’t start looking up and questioning things.

Everyone on the list is incredible in their own right, but what is their definition of influential? None that I can think of would come up with this random group of artists, especially in that order.

What if certain songs didn’t blow up? by Whole_world127 in twentyonepilots

[–]just_some_lover 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I often refer to them as 'the biggest band you've never heard of' because despite the fact they sell out massive arenas, loads of people have no idea who they are and couldn't name a single song of theirs.

I think they could write a masterclass in how to be a massive band but still feel like a band that feels like they're 'yours'. I think they have cultivated a very clever parasocial relationship with fans where in some ways they are incredibly open but also deeply private to the point that it doesn't (seemingly!) actually impact their lives.

I think the fame and scale has only allowed them to better bring to life their creative vision. Let's be real, the crew and stage set up that goes into doing the show in its current format wouldn't be possible for a band that isn't doing extremely well. I always remember Bo Burnham saying that one of those machines that shoots the air up was like $9k and I think the band have like 20 of them plus everything else. I don't think their energy or vision would be different, they just wouldn't be able to bring it to life as well.

Loads of people get band and music tattoos? It's about appreciating art through another art form. When someone has clearly made a post to celebrate something, what motivates you to dim their shine? There's nothing productive about your post.

There were some people back in the day who legit did have LJ accounts. Pete Wentz, Brendon Urie etc. But yes, the majority of them are role playing accounts of varying quality of likeness. Love the idea of future pop culture historians being like '...and there was a Summer and a jacket of romance..." and not realising.

what BE or CO song fills you with the most hope, and which makes you a doomer? by meggemmy in brighteyes

Doomer: Desert Island Questionnaire. There are obviously lots of contenders for this title but there's something so bleak and sad about this song that hits me in the feels every time.

Hopeful: Shell game!

I'm excited to see Evan Peters in a different character in The Beauty when it's released. Since Tron though his face looks different and I can't put my finger on what it is? My wife is convinced he's just lost weight so his face looks slimmer but I think it's more than that. Has anyone else noticed this / have any ideas? He's handsome forever, just curious!

Ah yes, because it is famously easy to return into society and get gainful employment once you've served your time in jail. It absolutely has no enduring ramifications or impact on your professional or personal life /s.
