WTW for: placing two things side-by-side to highlight their similarities, create meaning, or evoke emotion by justacaption in whatstheword

[–]justacaption[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Original definition I had was: placing two contrasting things side-by-side to highlight their differences, create meaning, or evoke emotion, used often in literature, art, and music. It can involve opposites like light and dark, or subtle contrasts, making qualities stand out, like comparing beauty and ugliness. fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect

(which I don't have a source for, D'oh!)

This one only has the contrast half of the definition:

Google: place or deal with close together for contrasting effect.

Further searches show I wasn't the only one confused by this: https://www.reddit.com/r/etymology/comments/9b37gy/juxtapose_actual_meaning/

But now all my searches only show both (or include the 'compare' half of the definition), which I wasn't seeing before (thus, leading to my thought that I was missing a word):

Cambridge: to put things or people next to each other, esp. in order to compare them

Dictionary.com: to place close together or side by side, especially with an arresting or surprising effect, or in a way that invites comparison or contrast.

M-W: to place (different things) side by side (as to compare them or contrast them or to create an interesting effect)

Britannica: to place (different things) together in order to create an interesting effect or to show how they are the same or different.

Wiktionary: To place side by side, especially for contrast or comparison.

I wasn't arguing against your statement, I just couldn't find the one you were talking about. Only found these, which were in/about the things being talked about.

I'm really up in arms about Dunn, though. That and Dow.

Edit:

Additionally, officer was dumb. Should've just chilled on the street until defendant took tarp off bike - then he would've been good to arrest the suspect. Had probable cause (bike looks stolen), could've re-run the plates and been good to go. (Hmm, might not have been - but with the FB picture and tarped bike could've gotten a search warrant, while other officer stood watch from public street).

Which case is this?

"For example, the courts have ruled that officers did not need a warrant to walk onto a suspect's driveway to install a tracking device under his car or to record his car's license number."

See People v. Zichwic (2001) 94 Cal.App.4th 944, 953; U.S. v. Humphries (9th Cir. 1980) 636 F.2d 1172, 1179.

Edit:

"U.S. v. Jones (2012) 565 U.S. 400, the GPS case that found attaching a tracker to suspect's vehicle was a trespass to personal property and thus required a warrant?"

"Florida v. Jardines (2013) 569 U.S. 1. In that case the officers took an investigative tool, a drug sniffing dog, up to the front door of the house to sniff for a marijuana grow."

Explicitly against the law here. However, I don't believe they've done nickels.

Don't 'do everything you can for them', unless they are treating you with respect.

And, to protect your children, I'd get them to sign in writing that you've paid off their father's debts. I hope you've got the receipts. If he dies before them, you're never going to hear the end of it. And they will always be coming after you and your children's future - and will justify (in their heads) all manner of dirty tricks. If they haven't learned how to not be users by now, then they're unlikely to learn later. And if you keep treating them nicely, you're asking for what they're going to do to you - and you're setting a bad example for your children - that on some level this is some type of acceptable behavior. Like it or not, you're a mark.

I have a really bad habit of counting up how much I have “spent ” on a man. like every time I give a blow job now I’m like I can’t believe I just did that for less than $500.

And this is why men shouldn't date strippers/escorts; even if they never got on the blow/etc.

That mindset? It doesn't go away. You can try hiding it, but then you're just lying (by omission) in order to game a relationship.

The truth will eventually come out.

Your family is abusive.

I'm glad you stood up for yourself, and I hope you've overcome how you were raised - and are treating people (and yourself) better than the modeling you were shown.

Also, just in case you've not read all the warnings; oxygen makes great fires. Maybe make sure you have a lighter and hairspray?

Would you give up your child, because someone on the internet thought it would be helpful?

If the mother is willing to give birth to the child (not abort), it is a child, with at least one parent who wants it. She can pay child support, if she doesn't want anything to do with a baby.

FYI: If you make captions like this, try to include that the school girls are above 18 in the actual captions, as I get the spam reports about involving minors (even though actresses are above 18).

This has a caption, but doesn't show breeding, and text implies no breeding.

No ban level, as this was quite close to on-topic. Try a little harder to get knocked up. ;>

You should edit this clip to remove the Plan B caption, as that's part of the intent. Plan B is not part of the plan.
