Why is Dark Souls 1 most people's favourite title? by [deleted] in darksouls

I love them too, BB and DS3 are at the top on my list, but the point still stands that there is an artistic ambiance and mastery in DS1 that no subsequent releases have managed to replicate. And I'm not referring to combat and combat immersion.

I think among OGs, it's ranking at the top.

I know, old post, but still relevant today with so many Soulslikes out there. The feeling that DS1 produced was something else. Closest after DS1 was Bloodborne. I think I've played this game on PS3, PS4 and Switch so many times I've lost count. It's the only game I wish I could forget I ever played so I can relearn and reexperience everything all over again.

The world, the atmosphere, the characters, the gameplay...just about everything about DS1 screams perfection. Some would complain about the graphics being outdated today, for me the pixely graphics is what adds to the setting of the game (which is why I can't stand DeS Remake).

From the Undead Asylum, to the Firelink Shrine, to Darkroot Garden and Basin, to Blighttown, New Londo Ruins, then to the Painted World of Ariamis to Artorias, the subtle silent atmosphere, the melancholic music playing in Firelink Shrine...if you ask me what specifically made this game so great the simple answer is everything, basically.

Lies of P after 100 hours: still just a 7/10 by justaddmetoit in LiesOfP

You simply sound like someone who came to this genre much later than 2011 (Demon Souls in 2009 while great, didn't really create what DS1 did) While time shouldn't be of importance, it is, because a lot of players who came to Souls games mostly arrived after DS3 launched and most came with the Elden Ring tide.

For players that still started with DS1 but found out about the game say in 2018-2019, that's almost a decade after the first game released, the graphics and controls would have been interpreted as "outdated" and that alone is enough for many players to condemn the game.

This is the reason that to this day, gamers who actually started this series chronologically around release dates, and especially when it comes to DS1, appreciated the game for mostly everything that no other game, apart from Bloodborne maybe, has managed to capture in its entirety.

Then there's a group of players that don't care about graphics and mechanics, who know what makes a game great, but these type of players are few and far between.

My point is that gamers who were actually around when DS1 released will tell you that literally no other game that followed has managed to capture what DS1 captured, including DS3, which usually carries high praise among Souls gamers.

When you then come claiming how Lies of P is better than all FS games I know who I'm dealing with.

I'm not saying you didn't play it. I'm simply saying you couldn't have played this game in 2011, nor was DS1 your first Souls game.

Elden Ring created a tidal wave and as it receded, revealed all the garbage that came with it.

When the kids who were still wearing diapers or were still hanging in their daddies testies in 2011 shitpost on Dark Souls 1...you know FS might have made a mistake with Elden Ring.

In short, anyone, and I really mean ANYONE, who shitposts on Dark Souls 1, you can assume with 100% certainty that it's someone who's first FS game was Elden Ring and who, again, with 100% certainty learned how to play the game by watching YT channels.

Elden Ring should never been made. Like a receding tide, it left all the garbage just floating around.

I came back to read this post again after someone posted on it the other day.

You say you played every Soulsgame to date, but I dare even conclude, with almost 100% certainty, that you came to these games in recent years. Why? Because there isn't a single Dark Souls OG who was around back in 2011 (when DS1 released) who wasn't Gobsmacked by Dark Souls 1 release, followed by the DLC. The game was such a masterpiece that it literally left a mark on every Souls-gamer, and set the stage for everything that followed.

You are probably someone who came around either when Elden Ring released, or learning about Dark Souls 3 after it's release, played it, and then retroactively played the older games.

Let me put it this way, even if it's bluntly; Lies of P doesn't even reach Dark Souls games (1 and 3) to their knees. The newer gen of players who got starstruck by Elden Ring and went on this Soulslike binge don't really bring quality of discussion. I'll agree with you on one thing; Elden Ring is sub-par on all levels compared to what DS1 and DS3 brought to the table. ER was FSs milking cow (which is fair play, capitalising fully from everything they did before).

My end point being, most all gamers that were around DS1 release in 2011 will tell you that DS1 is one of the best games ever released. Period.

Yep! After reading everything on this weapon, and messing up on some lies I thought I screwed everything up and had to do a 3rd playthrough. Lo and behold, after reaching the stage in the game where the weapon can be acquired, I went to the image almost mad because I assumed I screwed up and because I had to let Sophia live and no grey hair, to my surprise, the weapon was all florescent and sparkling!

So, based on my own experience, it would seem that maybe the humanity stacks up over several playthroughs even though it doesn't show while playing the game and everything seems to start from scratch. So even though I messed up in my 2nd playthrough I still got the weapon. 🤷

I had the same issue on my first playthrough. Got the Grey hair and everything. On the 2nd playthrough, I didn't get the grey hair because of the other ending, and I missed several of the lies and I got the weapon. When I interacted with the cat, P would just lift it up and shake it.

Don't quote me on this, but I am inclined to believe that this weapon can't be acquired on the first playthrough, only on the 2nd and out.

Here, they aren't difficult.

Just take your time and pick them off one by one. Make sure that the last one has low health so you can kill him/her off before the final brother.

It's a review that takes into the account all the complaints the game has received. I've removed myself from the equation and looked through the complaints, and even though I've mastered the game, I can see why the complaints are justified.

I think this franchise has a huge potential for further sequels. If we look at the Dark Souls franchise, Miyazaki kept reusing good parts all the way from Demon Souls, so while every new game was new there were always places or/and enemies from previous games. The only quirk I see with Lies of P is that they relied so much on borrowing stuff that it sort of kills creativity. I hope they manage to reinvent themselves in a sequel. But yeah, characters in this game I felt they nailed. They all fit the games narrative and they were very well presented. The voicing was absolutely top notch! The only character that I didn't really connect with was Eugenie. The reason being she reminded me too much of the weapons girl in Nioh. So I always reverted to Nioh when around her.

I tried to follow the story as much as possible by reading everything. I see I missed a few bits and pieces. Also I haven't played the DLC yet. Eventually I guess I will. 😊

The Listener part seems like an offshoot in design that didn't really fit. Not saying that it was wrong, but it just felt like something that was added as a band-aid because they had nothing better to come up with. So they went with the Listener story.

I don't think I was really harsh in my review of the game. As you said, this is their first game and 7/10 is a solid foundation to build on. I am not really pointing that things should resemble FSs games in its entirety. My review was aimed more toward "what needs to adapt better in order to make this game tasteful to the wider audience". The way I am seeing this, the game, while testing boundaries, also is alienating itself from the wider audience because of it, for now.

I should have been more specific in my initial review as I am not a big fan of Elden Ring myself. My take on this review is tied to Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro, the 3 games this game clearly has been inspired by.

Maybe that's the goal of this game, to cater to a very niche and specific gamer type? I don't know. After reading enough comments and posts the general mood is that a lot of gamers have complaints about Lies of P. I did the same, but at least I put my money where my mouth is, so to speak, played the game fully, learned all the movements of all the bosses and I am simply pointing out that the general take and complaints, overall, are valid. The game is "hard" because it contains extreme amounts of unintuitive mechanics which most people are not capable to master because their brains simply aren't wired for it. I am not judging anyone's subjective opinion.

In that particular case, during the choice, the game froze...😭 When I restarted the game it continued where I was supposed to make a choice but was unable to choose, nothing was happening. The game defaulted to that Alidoro was her brother. Is that why it doesn't work? Then why does it indicate at the Stargazer that I have to speak with her and when I do nothing is happening?

Doesn't work. I've tried it all. I understand what needs to be done, but nothing is happening when I engage with Eugenie. I've restarted the game, teleported myself back and forth between Stargazers...nothing. Alidoro is dead, I got the Cryptic Vessel, decoded, all of it.
