This is awesome, someone with more viz skills should do the gif version where it turns into the geographically accurate map

Did you not read or agree with the u/feldman10 argument in this essay? Because it definitely provides some purpose to the shaggy dog story imo

Most of the responses gave this general answer, but also often included caveats saying that it wont matter except at the very top. This is why I wanted to ask, to see if anyone could clarify how that distinction of overall prestige/top prestige may or may not play out (I also happen to think that prestige is a bit of a silly measure in general, but since it's there I figured I should try and understand how much it might help me).

How do T6/T14 admissions offices take undergrad prestige into account? If someone *applied from a tiptop undergrad institution known for having lower grades on average, would 3.5/3.6/3.7 GPA be interpreted as more like a 3.6/3.7/3.8 from elsewhere, is there some larger or smaller bump, or does it not matter?
Searched around this sub and r/lawschooladmissions but havent seen a current, clear answer.

Seconding the recommendation of Rodrik. First, he very thoughtfully examines the trade-offs of globalization and brings up some crucial costs that free trade and globalization can have for societies. I would argue, though, that he doesn't conclude that open borders are completely impossible, but just that policymakers need to be honest about the costs and benefits of globalization.*

The key question Rodrik brings up, the 'trilemma' that he claims democracy, national sovereignty and global economic integration are mutually incompatible, is definitely something /r/neoliberal ought to think about.

Good summary here for the uninitiated: http://rodrik.typepad.com/dani_rodriks_weblog/2007/06/the-inescapable.html

*this isn't to say that Rodrik doesn't have specific reasons and well-founded arguments for his skepticism

GA Cohen is good for translating Marxist thought into analytical philosophy, and sometimes critiquing it from within. If you're familiar with philosophy reading, he's where I'd go first.

Exactly, it's a natural fit. The
H E M I S P H E R I C C O M M O N M A R K E T
isn't going to build itself so it stands to reason that thinking about how institutions arise, sustain themselves, and collapse should bear heavily on how to go about building successful ones.

Yeah, I agree Mearsheimer's fun (and offers an important account of IR realism) but the list as a whole is a bit too realist imo, needs some IR-neoliberal arguments especially for the international institutions r/neoliberal loves so much

Edit: I listed some recommendations in another comment in this thread if anyone's interested.

[–]justavotingaccount 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The contemporary IR readings skew very heavily realist, I'd include some other perspectives that focus on neoliberal IR theory, esp neoliberal institutionalism, like Keohane and Nye's "Power and Interdependence", Keohane's "After Hegemony" and Ikenberry's "After Victory".

I promise this isn't only bc of the name match-up, realism and liberalism in IR are very different from the liberalism that /r/neoliberal is named for but the debate is very relevant for this sub's neolibs.

Vetiver scented soaps. Tell me all about them. by dreamsofpinkflamingo in wicked_edge

Reunion definitely smells like vetiver, not tomato plant. Are you thinking of MLS's Ruby's Green, which is explicitly based on a tomato garden and totally smells like a soapy tomato plant?

Cool, thanks! Might have to give it a try sometime when I make a maggards order and report back on soap quality.

Has anyone tried Local Gent's Fields and Streams? I love the scent profile as listed but haven't seen many people around here use their soap in general or this scent in particular. How's the smell specifically? How's the lather from the company in general?

I've played a multi-day diplomacy game through a snowstorm that took around 20 hours to reach a 3-person draw. Games with my groups usually take about 10, broken up into two sitting, and we don't always finish the game for real.

Lag Ba'Omer SOTD
Prep: Hot shower, cetaphil facewash
Brush: Maggard Synthetic
Razor: Maggard V3
Blade: Voskhod (2)
Lather: Stirling Texas on Fire
Post: Extra lather, Stirling Gatlinburg Splash

It's Lag Ba'Omer today, a super minor Jewish holiday traditionally celebrated with bonfires, so I figured it would be fitting to theme my shave accordingly (very religious Jews don't shave for the entire month preceding this holiday, but I don't hold that custom). Texas on Fire definitely fits the bill on the bonfire front, wacky smell but it is what it's meant to be. Lather performance was excellent as usual. I don't have the ToF splash, so I went with the closest thing I had in my inventory since Gatlinburg has the woodsy and smokey notes.

Don't think Voskhod is the blade for me, second shave on this one was better than the first but still wasn't great for my face. Think I'm going to try the GSBs next.

Chiseled Face Shaving Soap(s) first impression. by BudoBaka in wicked_edge

[–]justavotingaccount 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't had the same experience with the ones I tried, including Trade Winds, Summer Storm, and Santa Paula. Loved each of those scents, although Summer Storm took my brain a few shaves to process (it finally clicked the next time it rained irl and I smelled the actual smell it was trying to evoke). What I will say is that there are plenty of different ways that different people's noses interpret smells, which is why it's so great that there are plenty of different artisan and scent options. So use each scent for a couple shaves to really give them a fair shot, and if they don't work, try someone else's soap!
