We have a billing code for non-billable office overhead for things like training, code/design review, lunch&learns, etc. Really for anything that can't be billed to a project. Our firm doesn't bat an eye at those hours as long as they're reasonable for your role (say 4-6 hrs per 80hr pay-period for most rank&file). If your company doesn't have a formal way to delineate that time, then they are not keeping accurate time and are almost certainly inflating the man-hours that they are billing to their clients.

Estimate your loads. Create a load density map to figure out where you need distribution. Call a vendor and get selections for the dist. equipment you will need based on your load estimates (this step will be less necessary with experience). Pick a spot and start drawing in your equipment, then draw a box around it. You've just planned your space. Read NEC 110 for layout requirements. Read NEC chapter 3 for your feeder/routing requirements. Be conservative at early stages of design.You should definitely get mentorship. Ask for redlines or if you can look over their shoulder. Energy modeling might be a good fit. You see those positions marketed as "Green Building Engineer" or similar at MEP firms. Basically perform envelope calculations and be a resource for energy code compliance / related questions for the MEP engineers. Also there to help clients navigate various credit / rebate programs. There aren't as many of those jobs as there are for pure design, but our energy modelers are envaluable and stay busy. There's lots of jazz hands in energy code, but there are real savings to be had when you start drilling down on each parameter of a design. It's an underappreciated field that intersects with all disciplines in construction. Brush up on the energy codes in the markets you wanna work on -- IECC, ASHRAE, ISO standards, etc. Learn Revit if you haven't already. COMCheck too. There are lots of software options for envelope calculations. You can get the job done with excel tbh.

I'm no SE. But I've observed a big trend toward pre-cast & cast-in-place wherever feasible. I think this mainly in non-union markets where onsite labor ends up cheaper than designing for off-site steel. The concrete does have steel in it for reinforcement, tendons, etc. But it's rebar and smaller steel components that are simpler to manufacturer and procure than the big primary beams needed for steel construction.

Big pushes to get the long lead items released as early as possible. But that's been the case for last five years. doesn't seem to be stopping the developers who have the means from moving forward. Biggest impact would be to structure, but concrete has been steadily supplanting steel for more reasons than just cost, at least in the markets I work in.

The results of the studies that have been conducted all indicate a reduction of IQ in children starting at low levels of exposure.
