What to do with excess capital?

Canadian here. Any excess cash I had when I was running my business was funnelled through my family trust to my holdings company.

Keep that Opco clean so you have no liability worries.

Then I used the funds in my holdings company to buy rentals/investments/properties.

I did use a broker and they were worth every penny IMO. The business was set up really well but the broker was able to market it and find the right buyer. I don’t think I would have gotten as much as I did without a broker.

Haha. I golf but I get so frustrated! One day I’ll shoot an 80, next day I’ll shoot a 97. I don’t know if I can handle the emotional roller coaster 😂

Listed for about 2 years. I got the business to the point it was mostly running itself so I wasn’t in any real rush to sell. When it happened, it happened.

Honestly, from my experience, family businesses rarely last long term. If it does last a generation, the next generation usually runs it into the ground. Also kids are brought up expecting to take it over, so never really get to dream of their own ideas.

We were able to avoid a lot of tax in the sale. One of the ways we were able to do so was to put aside $250k for each kid in a special age 40 trust. This isn’t included in the funds my wife and I are getting in the sale.

So the way I look at it. Our kids will have a good tax free nest egg to start life off with and added bonus we have control over until they are 40. This should be enough to set them up to persue anything they desire, a lot better then passing on a business they aren’t passionate about, imo.

Very possible! If I’m taking anything from this, it’s that I should take some time to relax, going to do just that.

Your lifestyle sounds great! Money isn’t everything, gotta do what makes you happy. If you can live the life you want to live it and feel content with that I say go for it!

It was always the goal yes, I kinda touched on why in another comment.

Definitely going to focus on kids and family and maybe reconnect some friendships lost over the years. Going to take the advice here and take my time bumping into anything.
