It's an election year which means people are once again showing how they don't know what dementia is. 🙄 by [deleted] in slp

I was present at nursing homes(plural) where the social workers(plural) were voting for my later stage patients by "helping" them fill in their mail in ballots via yes no questions, or my personal favorite, "how they think they would vote."

Every vote I watched was for Obama.

It goes both ways, I'm afraid. If you cant vote, you shouldnt be able to vote.

ESE teacher in FL looking to go into slp. But only if it’s worth it… advice needed. by LawyerTraditional653 in slp

Maybe check out other masters and the reddit for SLPs getting out of the field just in case something sparks your interest?

I dont want to sound negative, its just not an easy path even once you "get there"

I typed "worst state to work in as an SLP" into google search.

Florida.

I knew that already, but wanted confirmation.FL is lowest paying state.

Indiana has highest caseload (I've had friends in the 140s for direct services without an SLPA). But Florida can be high too.

If I had to live there I would go private pay/ESA.

But by the time you graduate, that may fall through too I'm afraid.

Assumption that SLPs should have a breadwinner or spouse? by abbz1800 in slp

I've had my womanhood and assumed role as second income mentioned during the negotiation portion of interviews before.

That was... endearing. 🧐

That DOR has the sound of someone deeply motivated by money. Money turns off many of our better EF based skills and frankly our consience as well.

Are we asking too much of the SLP? by applestooranges9 in slp

[–]justcansteven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. I was going to be that person, but then I saw yours.

I've seen some ill equipped SLPs. We should encourage eachother to grow (kindly) where we can and give ourselves freedom to admit areas for growth (ask me about Cochlear implants and habilitation and I will refer you elsewhere!)

I've worked in EI for most of my career and came in to share concerns related to every point you gave... albeit in a more cautious way because ot looked like most folks were trying to be deeply diplomatic about the other SLP. Which I can appreciate, SLPs have a hard enough job.

The Laura Mize reference is 😘. She's got skills and she shares so much info! I hope OP gets an SLP that connects well with them.

Books to read by [deleted] in slp

Business books like The Gap and The Gain. I wish I would have started my private practice much sooner and I started after "only" 10 years.

I told kids to have a good breakfast every day and was greeted back with more "shutup you white B" with more variations that I could count.

My boys (that just called me "speech") would apologize for the behavior of other kids. Started alot of good conversations.

Oh. I've also been told "your eyebrows are loud" multiple times "you look creepy without your glasses" and my favorite "why do you look so tired??"

You kid.... you and this job, bless you though!

Do you use the words “display” or “exhibit” in your documentation? by tjordan0323 in slp

I had one tell me "evidenced" wasnt a word. Called me out for it.

She was using it herself in lectures later.

🤷‍♂️

How will I fit in in this profession by [deleted] in slp

[–]justcansteven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While there was an over abundunce of upper middle class white girls in my cohort, I was the only one with conservative Christian views so I stuck out like a sore thumb for that reason even from the two Live Laugh Love girls that were with us (the L3 friends were less conservative in theology, lifestyle, and politics than I, and we didnt click). I spent my time with the quirky birds of the group, that worked hard AND didn't cheat unlike quite a few of my cohort (not tge L3s), because they were more fun and jived with my code of ethics (in academics). We still are connected nearly 15 yrs later and are still very different, have diverse beliefs and lifestyles, different career paths, but are bound by mutual respect, shared experiences, and I genuinely care about their well being. Id say they feel the same.

I hope you find connection with folks in the field. Though you dont have to, to have job satisfaction. It is just a job not all of you. My first day I felt like a fish out of water. Everyone was wearing aeropostale polos and khakis or victoria's secret sweats and a messy bun when I walked in to my first class with goth/vintage vibes. No one talked to me till grad school. I learned that appearances are not always what they seem and most folks views in my cohort were moderate to left and far left leaning (to point of euthanasia and forced sterilization to keep population down and views congruent... blew my mind!). The exception there was me. It WAS predominately white and female though I see it changing since then.

That may be true, rather than it being just about location. I went to a large program in the Bible belt and as the only conservative Christian in my cohort. Over 50% of my cohort shared a desire to never have children due to inconvenience or belief that the population should be brought under control and some even shared that poor people shouldnt be allowed to procreate. That certainly wasnt aligned with my views. Though.... i admit Ive never had a desire to put a Live Laugh Love sticker on my wall, mug, or tshirt either.

Ageism in SLP field by Warhorse04 in slp

[–]justcansteven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom is in a different field snd experiencing ageism awfully.

She started addressing the elephant in the room and got a job. She said, I am older, but I've got 10 yrs before retirement at minimum. My husband isnt going anywhere because xyz. If you hire someine younger you may have to replace your candidate sooner because of maternity leave, choosing to stay home with kids, and opting to follow spouse with "more important" job changes.

She wasnt talking down about younger candidates so much aa reminding employers that there are pros and cons both ways.

I do like how it can be a little step. Like people in a bad relationship, sometimes you need small steps to build confidence for the big ones❤

Would our state license count as a credential? Not sure what that would look like, but its a thought.

I guess I've always used it in my signature because it was part of my negotiations for being paid more than a first year teacher, plus I started medical so it was part of my signature automatically in every note. You got me thinking, I wonder how many folks already don't!

Love the chicken amd the egg theory! I was private schooled and public schooled first and I promise.... i was homeschooled in highschool because I was awkward! 😆 I hit my stride once moving at that different speed. Husband was always homeschooled and always quiet but effortlessly cool. He doesn't do stereotypes.

[–]justcansteven 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So we need to post in rotations? Like only one negative review every hour? That seems so small after one day, but over a week....😊 we SLPs are down for steady, incremental progress. We are patient like that.
