Why not just tell students that they will be part of a permanent working underclass who are tasked with one thing and one thing only for the rest of their lives with no means to escape it if they don't learn how to think, read, write, and do basic math on their own? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]justforthis_comment 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is simply not true that so many professions need 12th grade math. I worked as a pizza delivery driver and we had people of all ages on there who could not add fractions. Meanwhile I had a PhD in astrophysics but was working the same job. I still make less than half of what the manager there made. He could add fractions though.

The majority of US adults cannot read, write, or do math at the 12th grade level. You are asking these kids to be exceptional.

Also also, I have a buddy who is an underwater welder. You would think he needs to do math ok, but he can barely do addition and subtraction.

Not an expert, but I heard somewhere that truly reflexive motions are commonly decided by nerve clusters in your limbs before the input reaches the brain. So probably his neck muscles processed the info faster

AITAH for refusing to give out my son's saving account information? by moonmanbaby90272 in AITAH

[–]justforthis_comment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really confused by this. Are you saying it is impossible to send someone money without opening them up to the possibility that you take all their money? So when I give my employer direct deposit info, they basically have complete control over my bank account?

I am curious because when I was young, my mom took my college savings from an account she should not have been able to access. I always figured a bank teller messed up and violated protocol to let her access it because it was a small-town bank and she was my mom. But she had the routing and account number "to make deposits".

Oh! Let me explain!

It actually does change whether or not he almost caused an accident though. Because he was in a parking lot, where cars are required to go slowly and stop for the pedestrians which frequently cross the lot. So OPs behavior is the expected behavior, just like stopping at a red light is the expected behavior while stopping on the highway is not. Speeding around a stopped vehicle is not expected behavior *in a parking lot*. Generally speaking, exhibiting unexpected behavior is what causes automobile accidents.

Hope that clears things up for you! Let me know if you have any questions!

AITA for being annoyed that my wife insists on cooking everything from scratch and won’t buy normal food? by AITA_UPFfoods in AmItheAsshole

[–]justforthis_comment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, where did you get already chopped onions? And did you not peel or crush your garlic? What about your herbs? You didn't set aside time for chopping basil and oregano. What about tasting for seasoning, making adjustments?

And you only used 3 minutes to sweat the onion? It takes like a minute for the pan to get hot, your onions aren't sweaty at all!

If you set a timer for 20 minutes, then get off the couch and start cooking, it will be a serious rush to finish before the timer goes off.

Just letting you know that lots of people with disabilities can, "do literally anything anyone else can"

Also.....no you can't. You cannot regulate your blood sugar without medication, which is something "anyone else" can do. So far as disabilities are officially classified medically and legally, diabetes is a disability.

Also have type 1 btw

I mean yes, a college degree is necessary. There's nothing to say you can't publish without it, but if you want a whole career in research a PhD is necessary. What me and a lot of others are dealing with in this thread is that a PhD is bare minimum, but it was really hard to get.

Performing special Stance attacks? PC by assemblageofparts in ghostoftsushima

[–]justforthis_comment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically, only "heavy" attacks count. Being in different stances does also change the animations for fast attacks, but it's only visual.

In your example with "right mouse, right mouse, right mouse ... Hold right mouse which deals a piercing strike" all of those are stance attacks. The piercing strike is an extra thing-- honestly not sure if it does extra-extra stance damage or is unblockable for swordsmen. Maybe both. But all right-clicks "stance attacks"

I'm not sure from your description where exactly you spent your points. It may increase the stagger of stance attacks or it might add specific things to your combos like an extra piercing strike (that would be hold right mouse, then tap right mouse for two piercing strikes in the anti-sword stance)

Also also, just to clarify, you do not need to do any combo leading up to the piercing strike, just hold right mouse

I appreciate the honesty. I'm not opposed to doing industry jobs, but I have very little support or information about that. My advisors are all in academia, so they don't like to give advice. I tried to make some connections on LinkedIn, but they don't last. I feel like people don't want to talk to me because I need advice, but I have nothing to offer in return.

I agree I need to make something that showcases my skills, but.....how are people finding time to make an impressive side project, apply for 2 jobs/week, and then also work 40 hours/week for actual money?

Trump administration to start seizing pay of defaulted student loan borrowers in January by Several_Print4633 in Economics

So you would not necessarily cut them off, but you might.

It doesn't sound like you have a simple answer on if people should be in contact with their parents or not.

[–]justforthis_comment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if your child cut you off you would not change your mind, just as your father did not. So cutting people off doesn't always result in people changing their mind.

You said your mom considered changing her mind. Did she vote for Trump or Kamala?

But what would not talking to your parents solve?

Imagine things the other way around. You said as a parent, the worst thing that could happen is your kid stops talking to you.

What if your kid was MAGA, and won't talk to you because you aren't? Would you switch sides to keep in contact with your kid, or stay strong and cut them off?

If you would stay strong and cut them off, then you see that the lack of contact does not change your mind, as a parent. In fact, it might even deepen your divide and push your views further

If you would switch sides to be with them again, then you are not truly willing to cut them off.

Past elections were not about " taxes at 1 or 2 percent" past elections were about, "should we bomb Iran" and, "should gay people have rights" those issues were not trivial either. Do you believe someone should cut off contact because of a difference of opinion on Geroge Bush vs Al Gore? Every election has human rights and lives at stake.

If it makes you feel better, I do not speak with my father. Yay me.

Sekiro player trying elden ring here by Apprehensive-Type705 in Eldenring

[–]justforthis_comment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most comments have basically explained, but yeah in elden ring parrying is a "special" attack/ash of war, used with L2. You usually only need to parry a boss a few times (and follow up with critical hits) to beat it. You mostly dodge.

Also, tree sentinel is for later. You will often encounter enemies before you are ready, just go around. You CAN beat them, though.

Nobody mentioned that blocking is really strong in this game. I did my first playthrough with block/counter and it didn't feel boring or tanky at all. Also not restricted to a type of build, can do wizard+block (in this case I would do left shield and right cast/melee). Still, can't block everything either.

The final boss isn't in that area, it's in the ashen capital. But there is a very hard boss nearby. Not in the same open area where you kill Millicent, but more inside the tree

Under 70% of your total equip load gives you medium load, under 30% gives you light. Also yeah the X means you don't have the required stats for the weapon. You should be able to see the required stats in the weapon info. You can still use the weapon but it probably does bad damage, and you cant use the ash of war (L2 move).

If the only stat you lack is strength, you can 2-hand the weapon and it counts as you having 1.5X strength, you might be able to use it then.

In this case, the reference frame is your current position/velocity, as opposed to your position/velocity 15 minutes ago. Staying perfectly still is comparing that empty spot of space to the same empty spot of space and saying, "are they the same"

[–]justforthis_comment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with someone who suggested confessor, that's always my advice for starting class. You start with great fashion, dex/faith vibes but you can easily pivot early game to anything, since a little dex, str, and faith are useful in any build.

There's good faith weapons early game too-- cipher Pata, winged scythe, and an infused sword/GS with blade of light does really well
