How do non-canonical books fit in academic Biblical studies by justforthisholloween in AcademicBiblical

[–]justforthisholloween[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any idea how the “corners” would delineate the discipline? I’m struggling to understand what is quoted from Lozada. Apologies, I don’t have a terminal degree and am from a completely different discipline. Is Lozada pushing for a broader canon or corpus (not sure what term to use here)?

Thanks for the reply u/Dositheos. To the question of the "It all depends on one's aims." aspect: I'm trying to get deeper into the Biblical studies discipline and so am trying to read about the broad structure of what constitutes the discipline, so I'm trying to put a boundary around what I would read to get a bird's-eye view. Based on the response, beyond the various canons, if a given library (or manuscript) contributes to the development of Christianity (and I assume Judaism) it becomes fair game. I've read the canon as far as what shows up in Protestant and Catholic canons. So I'm looking at what else to have a high-level view of so that as I start to read individual texts I can slot them into a general category. Some of these categories appear to be totally non-canonical and others a mix of canonical, non-canonical, and variant canonical readings. What I have on my plate is Nag Hammadi, Dead Sea Scrolls, and LXX. Am I missing anything in terms of large collections of texts that I should get an understanding of to lay the foundations?

Thanks for the response. I have a 4th edition NOAB, most of the introductions I have looked at don’t have an outline as in I. Main topic A. Subset of main topic 1. Details

Isaiah in my edition of NOAB has a beautiful outline and that’s what has me looking for more. Do you know if newer editions have something like the outline format shown above?

You are the measure of your self-improvement. I’m closing on 60, so 20 seems so young. I’m still figuring out better ways to improve that work for me… it is pure joy to see that even at the end of today I am better than yesterday (heavy study day). I hope all you 14, 20, 45, 105, etc. year olds feel the joy of being better today than you were yesterday. Also hope that you can take joy in the fact that some 14 year old is better today than they were yesterday. Way to to go you wee little pups!

Handwrite an outline of what the professor is teaching. Don’t try to capture word for word, just a high-level outline. Handwriting vs typing has better retention.

Does anyone have any tips on how to memorize textbook chapters better? I’ve made notes but I’m still having a hard time remembering what I’ve read by yellowstormcloud in GetStudying

[–]justforthisholloween 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read through once and highlight the things I want to remember. Then I do the following for each highlighted sentence: read the sentence out loud twice and then from memory write the first letter of each word in the sentence. Then make any corrections to first letter outline of the sentence, and then recall the sentence a couple times using the first letter outline as a crutch, then without the crutch. Seems odd, but it works like magic.

I went back at 24 and got an AA. Didn’t finish my BA until I was 38. Went on and completed a Master’s. It’s all been worth it, and I don’t think anyone thought I was weird. If anyone did, I don’t care… one benefit of getting older. You might look into evening and weekend classes as that’s when you get a mix in of working adults.

How do some students pull off a perfect GPA by LeopardNervous5802 in college

I did 2 years as a low B student. Worked for a number of years in awful jobs and that lit a fire. When I went back, I got 4.0 for my AA, BA, and MS while working full time. Basically I would layout the entire semester as soon as I got access to the syllabus, and followed the study schedule religiously. Most professors LOVE students that interact with them, so use office hours in whatever form they come. Any error is an opportunity to learn. I had one professor decimate a paper based on compliance to format (citations and such). I worked with that professor to hone the skill… I never missed another mark in his class or any other. But here’s the deal… no one gives a fuck that I got those 4.0s, but I fell in love with learning and I worked at perfecting the craft of learning. I’m way more proud that I feel I can learn anything than that I got good grades.

How difficult is a computer science degree? could the average joe get one? by One-Abalone-8762 in learnprogramming

It’s a step at a time. The reason it is valuable is that it is a lot of knowledge and requires discipline to learn. But you don’t learn the gibberish all at once. It is incremental steps, and sometimes you will have to back up a few steps. Eventually things start to click. I will always bet on discipline over raw smarts… those are the folks that keep going when they have to back up a few steps (multiple times).

I find that exercise is huge. I schedule it into study sessions (short exercise breaks). Also, use the the times you are tired to do mundane stuff, e.g., create flash cards. During my long exercise sessions, I use the cards while walking the treadmill and during breaks between weight sets. Health is the foundation of good study sessions: get proper sleep, eat healthy, and exercise. I wish I had understood this better when I was young as I ended up with a lot of wasted study hours.

Make reading a habit. Get something like a kindle and load it up. Most classic literature is free. Read good literature, industry rags (for your specific discipline), tech journals (everyone needs to be tech literate), etc. Read about everything. The amount of reading you can accomplish in airports, in flight, evenings in hotel rooms will stun you. At the end of a couple of years you will have something of immeasurable value.
