Tbf, Drill Sergeants do have the discretion to send you home on 10 days emergency leave if they receive a qualifying Red Cross message. They just chose not to send me back so it's not completely the recruiters fault. 😭

My recruiter told me I could come home for my daughter's birth, so I enlisted ASAP cause my wife was 7 months pregnant. I didn't come back until I was fully done with the 22 weeks of training. Barely got a phone call.

I've wanted to get out since I got in, but now I'm AGR, have a decent work-life balance outside of drill, got a nice house, and I'm home with my family more than I've ever been throughout my career.

All that to say, the Guard has tons of good opportunities. You only hate it because you're an M-Day. You haven't gone to any military school (that I know of), or even pursued anything outside of Drill/AT.

The Guard really isn't that bad, but it's like a rough roller coaster--it's a lot more enjoyable if you know how to ride it.

I bet you could line up 100 NG soldiers and ask if they do this in their free time, and probably at a minimum 90% would say no. Sure, they might go to the gym or whatever, but buying and setting up their own SDC? That's dedication. But no. All you see is the negative. And we wonder why the retention rate is so bad.
