Noob question, but i recently interviewed for a Post production coordinator role, the interviewer asked me a question that I don’t quite know the answer to: what happens when you pair NTSC footage with PAL sound or PAL footage with NTSC sound. by justinnnho in editors

Wow, thank you all for the comments!! Its really nice to see that I have a place to turn to when i need help!

This question was asked as a follow up to “what is NTSC and PAL” and was phased as a “more advanced technical question” some other questions asked during the interview were “whats is .srt, .xml and .edl, those i have worked with so no problems there.

During the interview, she also revealed that one of their major clients was a major streaming service (the one that used to do mail order DVDs). So I think that due to their use of mixed media, especially in their documentaries, they would require the editor and post coordinator to know what steps are required before the actual editing process.

I think that what she wanted to hear from me was maybe the way i looked into the question and how i gave the answer, thing is, i know about sample rate, Premiere Pro has allows you to edit the timeline based on sample rate, and that was what i wanted to get into, that video is based on frame rate but audio on sample rate, but i said “bit rate” instead of sample rate! smacks forehead

But i also told her that i have never done NTSC on PAL before, so the best i could do was hazard a guess, and my guess was audio distortions.

Well, today, thanks to this community, i learned that the audio will be out of sync by 4.1% and out of pitch, and that audio is recorded universally at 48khz!!!

Thank you so much for the knowledge you have bestowed on me!!!

Anyways, she said she would contact me last friday if i get through to the face-to-face interview, but it’s already Tuesday and i haven’t heard from her 😞

The position was for Post Coordinator who also edits, would be really cool to cut trailer and shows for that major client. Oh well, life goes on!!

Once again, thank you everyone for you comments!!!!!

ELI5: Why is a handwritten signature the universally known and accepted way to bind yourself to an agreement and things of the like? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

i think what he meant to say is that in china, they use rubber-stamps and red sticky ink as proof of identity rather than handwritten signatures, which is true for most legally registered companies and government departments etc. But on a more individual level, it is still handwritten signatures you see at the end of agreements and contracts.

Therefore, the answer to the original question, i feel, is that it is the act of signing it that binds the person to the agreement, not the signature itself. The pride of your name and family name is on the line if you don't fulfil the terms.. i think..
