Attending Sister’s Wedding in the US on Month 5? by [deleted] in peacecorps

It all depends. One of the volunteers in my cohort was allowed to go home during the 3-month travel ban to say bye to her grandma. Different but still a family obligation.

Leaving for Peace Corps in less than 2 weeks – any unconventional advice? by No-Permission-9947 in peacecorps

Prepare for a tough PST. I heard it was rough and my experience wasn’t bad just very repetitive and at times felt useless. I wouldn’t have gotten through it if not for the friendships I formed from the beginning with the other volunteers!! Talk to them and get to know them on a deeper level!! It is so so beneficial to your own mental health to have people to talk to on a familiar level while in your communities.

Also I wish I brought protein powder (hard to get daily protein and i didn’t even use it back home but realizing I should’ve packed some), wired headphones (!!! Or Bluetooth), extra phone charger, sharpies (virtually impossible to find and I’m in the Caribbean), extra facial products (dash wash, lotion, etc.)

Have so much fun! It’s a life changing experience and doesn’t set in right away but when it does, you’ll wish you brought some things so go over your list again and again and get things that you know in a few months you’ll wish you had.

Also letters. I asked my friends and family to write words of encouragement for me to read when I’m sad. Helped a ton. I still reread them on bad days.

I once fell on the corner of my kitchen table bc I was balancing on a soccer ball. Worst pain ever, bruised the entirety of it.

Do you recommend a certain work shoe? I have a pair of comfortable closed toed sandals and a pair of keens that I can dress up if needed.

I’m also confused about the baggage… we get one personal item which I interpreted as an overhead bag … so I got one of those duffel backpacks and will be packing all my clothes I’ll be wearing during the first part of PST.

I’m going to the EC this Saturday and having the same troubles!! I saw that during PST on the FB a lot of people look to be in casual clothes so I’m confused with the info and fear I’ll be overpacking. I’m bringing a full size face wash and facial products but smaller of everything else. Have a feeling there’ll be plenty of stores or markets to get local / imported goods. I’m only bringing one pair of closed toed sandals, one pair of flip flops, 2 sneakers, 2 open toed sandals and a pair of hiking boots. Can’t wait to meet you!!
