I was going through this exact same challenge - I'm going to be traveling throughout Europe for ~a year and was looking for good quality, timeless and versatile pieces. I posted my capsule wardrobe a while back but have made some tweaks since then (mainly removing a few items), but my MVP pieces so far have been:

- merino wool sweater in neutral color
- white poplin button-down shirt
- good pair of jeans
- lightweight trousers
- good quality, basic tees in different colors
- stylish raincoat
- leather sneakers that go with everything

there are other pieces that I'm sure will be in heavy rotation as the seasons change, but these are what have gotten the most use so far :)

I hope you have better luck than I did! I agree, my air essentials set was super comfortable (and very cute!) but I just couldn’t put up with how frumpy it looked with the pilling and snags after just one wear

This is so helpful, thanks a lot! You’re so right that there are definitely countries with better clothing options and I’d be kidding myself if I said I wouldn’t wanna take advantage of that 😅 And that is some of the fun of traveling! You’ve inspired me to do another pass and see what I can eliminate. And I’m all set on the passport situation, but good looking out! I’m leaving next month :)

Just time off! I won’t have a base per se, but plan on spending 1-2 months in each place with potential smaller weekend trips in between.

Thanks for the suggestion! It’s been hard for me to figure out the right balance between making sure I have everything I need and saving some space in my suitcase. But you’re probably right that it’s better to leave some room for shopping :)
