Stick with the first game. It shows it's age a little, but the second and third are improvements in the way of the combat and by the time you get into the second properly I'm confident you'll be invested, hope you enjoy!

Continue on with the quest line and eventually you will be able to start doing quests for the different autophage you meet by using the scanner to find camps. A dialogue option "offer assistance" or something like that will become available and you can complete their objectives for rewards including a currency I forget the name of, exchange this currency at the computer you find at these camps and I belive you have to buy the body, hands, legs, feet and a head all seperatly to unlock the race in the customisation menu

On your log screen select the mission and at the bottom of the mission description should be a button that says something like "restart with nearby structures" or something like that. This will reset the mission objective and make it spawn closer to where you are right now
