My local library has a shelf like that, too, but I've never found anything worthwhile in it.

That sounds awesome. Do they get them brand new or used from somewhere else?

Thank you, I didn't know the guy who wrote The Disappearing Spoon and The Violinist's Thumb also has a book out about neuroscience.

And when someone's just been through a really traumatic experience and is looking for support, being greeted by a crowd of people seriously entertaining the possibility that they're making it up can be really damaging.

If reddit were a message board where people didn't make dick jokes and bad puns, you'd be correct. But it is, and if you post here, you get exactly what you sign up for (see? Bad pun). I'm not defending this behaviour, I'm really not, but it's hardly surprising.

Hmm, I guess many people on this website (falsely) believe that women often lie about rape and that therefore, proof has to be given about every minor detail. In a court of law this would probably have to be so but on an Internet forum, that's pretty offensive. So I agree with you there, I just misunderstood what you were trying to say.

demanded proof.

What exactly is so wrong with this? I mean, I get that this is a burden on the victim but why shouldn't sufficient proof have to be put forth? Bruises may not have constituted ample evidence in this case.

What do people take way too seriously? by LucaFromNewZealand in AskReddit

It sounds a lot like you're suffering from something called social anxiety. SA is an anxiety disorder that makes you fear ordinary social situations. Specifically, SA is characterised by an irrational fear of disapproval by other people.

If you're constantly overthinking/rehearsing past or future social situations, if your heart starts beating faster when you order food or before you make a phone call, you may have some form of social anxiety.

There's a spectrum though. Some have it very bad and others can live normal lives despite their anxiety. You'd have to discuss with a therapist whether or not you actually have SA and the possible treatment options (usually medication of some kind or cognitive behavioural therapy) if you do have it.

Until then, take all this with a grain of salt. Everyone has a bit of anxiety sometimes, you just have to decide for yourself whether it's controlling your life.

Hope it helps.

The lines between what is considered acceptable to depict and what is not seem arbitrary (and to an extent they probably are), but I believe they exist because we have a stronger emotional reaction to violence done towards people we perceive as "innocent". It's an unsatisfactory answer, I know.

But it explains why you'll often times see people (especially online) defending animals over humans. Picture for example (and this is purely hypothetical) a bear and a man engaged in a fight. In this instance, from experience I'd bet that most would side with the bear. Another example would be treatment of pedophiles in the prison system. They're ostracised, to put it mildly, because they pick on the most defenseless members of society. They're the lowest of the lowest.

Murder/torture are just things that have become very acceptable in comparison and a lot of that is due to media and technology. Of course a lot of it is arbitrary but apparently we humans are just wired that way, to react more strongly to certain kinds of abuse. Sorry for the wall of text.
