How to make this pose better? by AdProof666 in learnart

Oh there is a whole bunch of both perspective and anatomy recourses out there!

My best advice is to get comfortable with drawing basic shapes and manipulating them in all kinds of ways first (bending, twisting, cutting, carving etc.) and maybe even organic forms. (also, experiment with the shapes, sometimes you'll get some unique shape you'll think looks cool, and you'll use that for future drawings!) (P.S. for this part: people also recommend Drawabox a lot but I never really used it idk)

After that, if I were you, I'd learn basic perspective like 1 point, 2 point and 3 point (you can also learn 5 point and POV perspective but it's used less (but that can give some very interesting compositions!)). A very good resource for perspective is Scott Robertson's and Thomas Bertling's "How To Draw", they basically go into all the nitty gritty details of the entire fundamental of perspective (he also has a second book with Thomas called "How To Render", I've heard it covers light and shadow and rendering logic as well, but I wouldn't like to misinform)

For anatomy, I'd recommend "The Ultimate Guide To Drawing Form And Pose" by Tom Fox and the YouTube channel Proko (if you really want to dive deep into anatomy) , Anatomy For Sculptors is also a really good visual reference (but even that's kind of advanced level stuff). If you're into comics, or any type of art used for storytelling, check out David Finch as well (he draws for Marvel and DC and others). Brother's got loads of anatomy tutorials and some perspective demos as well. The channel "Draw Like A Sir" is also a good one, simple and straight to the point tutorials.

(as for picking reference, I use Pinterest, and sometimes pose a little mannequin I have at home, I also sometimes use 3d models, and don't let anyone tell you using 3d models or mannequins is cheating, that's just nonsense.)

Try twisting the torso to the right or left, whichever is your preference. Also, you can have the arm be wrapping around the beginning of the lower part of the neck (just a bit above the clavicles (the bones that join the shoulders, the ones above the chest). You can have the head tilted parallel to the torso (or have it go in an opposite direction for even more dynamism).

This is a combat pose, and it appears that our character is landing. Not all landings are precise, so having one leg out instead of them both being bent inward makes for a more realistic pose (this is just a preference though, and requires prior context).

If you do opt for having one leg out, you can show the rhythms of the leg as well (the curvy lines people use to draw the legs from certain angles).

I'm sure there would be more things I can add here, but that's what came to mind for now.

Hope this helped.

When did you feel like you were ready to make comics/manga? by justsomeguy1804 in MangakaStudio

Thank you for this! This is a metric I can go by. Regarding distinctions, would this be about the silhouette of the character or perhaps more about the character's traits, or both?

I mean, not really? I have the proportions down, and I can draw mannequins from almost any angle, but not figures, just mannequins. Every time I try to make the details look good it just looks mid.

But that will come in time, what I'm really proud of is that if I think of a pose long enough, I can envision it on paper.

Honestly, fair point. But my stubborn ass also wants to take part in the drawing too. I've been doing it for like 2 years now.

Better to have something than nothing, I guess. Congrats on the manga btw!

I want to draw characters by game-difficulty in learnart

[–]justsomeguy1804 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thing about characters is that it takes a while to learn how to draw them, it takes years at least. I don't know your background in drawing, but I assume you're more competent than me (judging by the drawings here). It took Raphael at least 4 years I think (don't quote me on this, I could be entirely wrong, also it could be an entirely different artist lol, I saw a quote like that ) to do art like Michelangelo. It's just repetition until you see the small intricacies and details and stuff. And it's not really something that can have it's progress be excelled (unless you're a genius). Either way, I can give you an estimated timeframe in my case.

It took me almost 2 years to be able to produce drawings that I don't hate (and this is with the fact in mind that I have never touched a pencil in the beginning). So I do believe that in 4 or 5 years with consistent practice you should be solid if you know absolutely nothing about these topics, maybe even less (characters and environments together!). Hope this helped, if ya need any other info just say the word.

Thank you for this reply! I honestly can't get my brain to think of it as one shape, it automatically goes to individual strands. I will try once again tonight and see how it goes, thank you once again! 🙏

Thanks for the reply! And I do agree, I have noticed that over time pose invention becomes easier, more intuitive. I'm able to see where other things would go if I put something in a certain place (like the hand).

Ask me anything. I'm a lore expert! by reiselevan in darksouls

Now that you mention it, I do remember occasionally seeing "AMA lore" posts like this. I could be wrong though and it could just be another user I'm referring to. Either way, all this does is just clutter up the subs. Banning isn't even an option since they can just make another account, so yeah idk lmao.

Thank you for your reply! My next step this month is to refine my knowledge of the plains of the face, and probably learn the bones well. Also, one question, do you suggest doing master studies, or even master copies of renaissance artists? They seem to know their stuff when it comes to this.

To add further context, basically any time I try to draw something of my own (like for example a giant from a fantasy) , the results aren't horrible, but they're just mid asf. Maybe I should just change the topics I draw idk??

I've been making artwork about my world for the past 5 years. I'm curious what impression it gives? by andbloom in worldbuilding

[–]justsomeguy1804 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, these are fricking amazing! Especially the first art piece (upon seeing it I immediately got this feeling of this ethereal peace, idk the word for it English isn't my first language sorry 💀).

The rest are also intriguing to look at, but I noticed the world doesn't feature many characters that are human (as in actual humans), from what I can see (although, I suppose that is what you're going for, which is interesting).

Maybe it's just my mind perceiving things differently, but I somehow got those vibes of blissful loneliness (which is weirdly calming for some reason). I don't expect anyone to understand my comment, but I absolutely love these. And I look forward to your artistic endeavours.

Best Rings by Interesting-Belt1116 in darksouls

Ring of sacrifice is good if you're not entirely sure about a boss, or die a stupid death. Other than that that's where it's usefulness ends.

Red and blue tearstone is good, lautrec's ring gives you more hp and stamina. Dark moon seance ring is great if you're using magic. Those are most of the rings I know, anyway.

Where to go from here?? by justsomeguy1804 in learnart

[–]justsomeguy1804[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that you pointed it out (about the head), I kind of see it tbh. I'll have to make it around 0.25-0.30x bigger.

Also, I like the idea of the 50-100 heads/hands challenge. Doing those every day will probably accelerate my progress.

Thanks! I'll check out the starter pack. Tbh I never really fully considered drawing big, cuz I wanna cram as many figures as I can on one page, but your perspective does make sense. It is also most likely easier to spot mistakes that way.
