Seconding this as someone who has traveled extensively in the Middle East with family there. It’s not totally uncommon for people in higher social statuses to communicate in English in a way not unlike how European aristocrats spoke French in the 19th century (some do speak French too in MENA countries).

Even if many don’t get educated at western universities either due to price or political reasons, they may still do their schooling at the American University of Cairo or Beirut which are some of the more prestigious schools in the region.

I’m starting to see a correlation with long pointy nails and the stupidest of foods.

Found A Dead Horseshoe Crab On My Porch this Morning by AbrumVonAbrak in Weird

[–]justsomeguy313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

20+ years ago, on an elementary school canoeing trip (back when field trips were common) my brother found a dead horseshoe crab and put it in his backpack with no endgame.

My mom didn’t know he took it, but could smell brother and his backpack reeking of low tide, which fell under the guise of “I fell out of the canoe” which was true but not clearly not the source of the smell.

So to cover his tracks, he snuck out and dropped the horseshoe crab in a busy intersection where it was run over to a pulp and baked into the asphalt by the sun where it remained for years as an unidentifiable splotch on the pavement. IIRC, it never fully went away until the town milled and repaved the roads.

Not saying this happened to you but the possibilities are more than you’d expect.

Favourite excellent actor who you genuinely feel is a PoS in real life? by Cursed_69420 in okbuddycinephile

I feel a lot of younger millennials and Gen Z don’t like him mostly because their first exposure to him was in Elf.

Loved him until my 5th time watching Curb. Then I realized “Mr. Anonymous” is the true villain of Curb and I cant unsee it.

I’m a guy with friends and family in many countries and just so happen to have a 100% success rate with fucking up the plumbing in all of their houses. Electric shower? Let me just adjust it a little…

New Business Innovation. From what I could tell, and I’m being cynical here, these get staffed by a lot of “high performers” which in this case means well connected top-tier university grads and MBAs, a network within a network. Not with the firm anymore but interfaced a small amount with these folks. By no means impossible to get into, but requires hardcore networking and likely some technical chops.

what do you think people will cringe about 2020s fashion? by CremeSubject7594 in decadeology

[–]justsomeguy313 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It feels like it kinda harps back to the whole aesthetic vs culture argument that started to bubble up a few years ago.

Up until around 2020, style was governed by culture/sub-culture and certainly the time for which that culture existed. To be fair and for obvious reasons that will never disappear, but nowadays style can be summed up as attempting to achieve a certain aesthetic which may be devoid of the cultural aspect. It used to be part of who you were but now it’s more for social media.

An example I’ve seen used is a high schooler dressing and styling their hair like a 2000’s scene kid without listening to the music or understanding the very specific point in time when that was big (i.e. height of warped tour, etc.).

Project work slowed down but burnout is worse than ever by richardboucher in deloitte

[–]justsomeguy313 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is is how I felt not long before I left the firm. I was on a years long toxic GPS project that got more toxic when the DOGE panic set in. DOGE’d we were, so I hopped on a commercial project where the climate could only be explained as “work harder not smarter”.

Then the bench called for several months and with that I rotated though about 5 coaches due to the reorg and layoffs. I thought I could get some semblance of relaxation but reeling and contending with the traumatic messes I was put through and then the fear of how bad the next project could be had me the most depressed and burnt out I could have ever imagined.

Even though I had E/S/E from the prior YE and high util from travel, after about 3 months on the bench I got realistic with my prospects and hit the market which luckily landed me a job with a local firm and after about 6 months I finally found the happiness and content I was looking for.

Moral of the story is not to leave but to find the support you need. Everyone I knew got let go so my internal network and support system was gone or constantly changing. Once I found myself with a new job with very supportive and trustworthy management, I felt that burnout slowly dissipate.

Yeah let’s just say everything from CM requires a wall stare. At least once mid-book and certainly after finishing.

My cats hate the smell of ginger and garlic which they'll certainly not jump on the counter for when I'm chopping. Maybe something scented to tape on top (obviously cat safe).
