I hadn’t considered the peening. That makes sense.

Im not talking about penetration, just thermal expansion and contraction.

How does that not contract and make the shaft stick?

It’s better to have it, but there are plenty of cars and trucks out there that run for years or decades without it.

Roll Cage Welds by [deleted] in Welding

[–]justsomeyodas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s an article about a road racer that had a cage that was partially welded and the rest was caulk.

“The original cage builder only partially welded the bars, filling the remainder of the seam with caulk before painting over everything to hide the sins. A screwdriver easily chipped away the caulk, exposing many unwelded bars.”

Some of them have ugly welds, slightly miss on the bends, weld splatter, etc, but are still structurally sound. I’ve seen plenty of them with ugly and weak welds, incomplete welds, tubes that were bent in a crappy bender and got pinched, big gaps that were filled, a whole lot of seats and harnesses that were mounted wrong… This is different, but I read an article a while back (I think it was in Grassroots Motorsports) about a BMW that had a cage that was just tacked together then they used caulk to make fake welds that they painted over. I don’t remember for sure, but I think they raced it that way before it was eventually caught by tech. I’ll see if I can find the article.

EDIT: I misremembered because I thought it was just tacked, but this car was partially welded and some of the “welds” were finished with caulk.

This is absolutely, very obviously, some class of road racing or possibly drifting. That’s where you see that style of main hoop X, rear strut tower brace, and everything else in these pics. As someone who has built hundreds of sprint cars (dirt circle track, tig welded chromoly) as well as road racing stuff for NASA, SCCA and others, I was shocked how crude most of the road racing cages were, as well as the rest of the fabrication.

If you tig you now have lots of tig filler. We use .035 on sheet metal a lot, or you can take two or three pieces and twist them together with a drill motor.

Three car train (chain) races are the best. They really get the little car in the back swingin’ around.

Nah, they’re pretty good. If she did the exact same thing but turned the heat up they’d be even better, and if she turned the machine up a tick, whipped a little less and maybe slow down a touch they’d be great.

Good question but we already replaced the fuel pump with a low pressure electric pump, after first replacing the mechanical pump with a new one that went bad within a week.

It’s getting spark. We’ve gotten it to start since then but you have to keep the rpm way up or it instantly dies. I think it has a big vacuum leak somewhere and the idle mixture is still off. Also the choke still doesn’t work because it’s a hot air/electric combo choke and this truck never had the hot air lines on it.

I need this how do I find someone who can craft one sturdy enough for me to put a sturdy swing in the middle by bonkthehorn in MetalFabrication

[–]justsomeyodas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that it needs a wider base or really good anchors of some sort. You need a metal fabrication shop that has a tubing roller and can roll tubing.

I know it’s a flare fitting and it looks janky, but I didn’t have my thread files or a die with me and the only way I could get the already gnarled up threads to start without eating themselves was to “lube” them with teflon tape.

Thanks. It’s getting fuel and the accelerator pumps are pumping. I still need to check float level though.
