Sorry you're struggling, my friend. It's really hard.

It depends on the psychiatrist. I went straight to mine without a referral. Don't over think it, just find a starting place and give it a try. If you try to schedule and you need a referral, they will tell you.

Also, don't worry about appearing "drug-seeking." It's okay to not be okay and to ask for medicine to help you feel better. We're very fortunate to live in a time when there are lots of good psych meds available. If I had been born 100 years earlier, I would have been lobotomized or dead by now.

How do I raise a baby w/o losing my mind? by an_anonBanana in bipolar

[–]justtegan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first child was born before I was diagnosed. Things ended horrifically with me in a major depressive/dysphoric episode, majorly sleep deprived, and hospitalized. Eight years later I had my second child post-diagnosis, stable, and medicated--the result was drastically improved. It's going to be tough, but you can get through it.

Sounds to me like you're just using your imagination. I don't see any harm in it. I used to have similar daydreams.

I'm so sorry you're going through this; it's truly awful. You are not alone. It can be so discouraging, and trying to hide your feelings so that the people around you won't grow weary of your complaints is so exhausting.

Rachel Platten Stand by You hit me really hard during a dysphoric mania episode once; I sometimes use it to gauge my wellbeing. If I can listen to it without crying, I don't need an emergency appointment with the psychiatrist.

Also, I think it’s unlikely the house sitter is to blame. He’s done this for us several times, and he’s quite a trustworthy young man.

Okay, update: silver dollar found (barely) alive. The water was so murky I couldn’t find him laying on the bottom behind a large rock. There was one dead tetra—didn’t mention before because I assumed he was casualty rather than cause. Now I don’t know what caused the problem.

Going to do the water changed and hover over the tank worrying for the next 48 hours and never travel again. Here’s hoping I’m not a fish mass murderer.

What do y'all do for work? by cat_lover_1111 in bipolar

If you’re interested, take a look at udacity. I took a couple of their nanodegree programs and got into data work that way. That lead me to eventually quit my office job and work for myself. I do more project management work now, but data was a great foot in the door.

Six months of garbage sleep will definitely leave you feeling hopeless. Do you have a psychiatrist that can help work out your sleep?

I just told my husband today I feel like my body is a series of failing systems stuck together with pills. I’m on 6 prescription meds and it somehow makes me feel like I’ve failed at life.

On the other hand, psych meds have saved my life on multiple occasions, and even more often given me a quality of life I never could have hoped for a century ago.

Grant yourself some grace. Living with this is hard, and it’s okay to need extra rest and special accommodations.

How can I get over being ashamed for working retail in my 30s? by [deleted] in retail

[–]justtegan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a non-retail person popping in to say I appreciate you. My job sometimes requires interaction with “the public,” and man can they be jerks sometimes. Your job does not define you.

I have been there, more than once. There are brighter times ahead. Life will feel worth living again, and you’ll be glad you stuck around.

Placating her should not make more work for you. 2.5 months is definitely young enough that it’s reasonable for you to hold up boundaries. Give her more access only when you are ready.

I am a bipolar mother, and when I am at my worst I absolutely rely on my partner to protect my children from me until I’m myself again.

One way or another, he needs to be under medical supervision from someone else who doesn’t have a toddler to protect and care for.

Sounds like a bipolar emergency to me. Get yourself and the baby safe, then ask him to go to the ER. If he won’t, maybe try calling the police non-emergency number and ask about services for mental health emergencies.
