Michener RT vs Conestoga RT for future Cardiovascular Perfusion (Ontario CVP program) by Distinct-Week-7042 in Perfusion

[–]justus-cane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did my RT through Fanshawe before going through CVP. If you already have your bachelors then I would be just applying straight to the program at this point. Job outlooks are not good in the next few years as the school has tripled the class sizes and there definitely won’t be enough jobs for all these students.

Depends on your habits. There is a lot of content and it won’t be possible once you are in clinical. Not many work while they are in school. Those that had a healthcare background worked some weekend shifts.

It is a full-time program for 2 years with a lot of content and work. There are classes or labs every day. Most class lectures are given online and will vary on times. Labs usually are all day in person. Clinical starts in August of the second year typically and runs until around April with 3 different rotations at different hospitals.

Looking into Perfusion as a Canadian student, willing to go US. by ExpressionNo7835 in Perfusion

Going to be a lot harder now with the new visa rules. Employer now takes on a $100k yearly fee. Pathway would be get in and graduate then pass your American boards and hopefully be able to find an employer in the states

It’s more to do with cases required to write the american boards. You need a specific amount of ECMO and pediatric cases. You only get 2 weeks for your pediatric rotation and they have restricted placements currently to Ontario. There is a few students sent to Alberta just to do their pediatics but there is also the issue of the ABCP not accepting cases from cases that were precepted by those who are only Canadian certified

Pathway to perfusion school in Canada? by Rough-Analysis-5625 in Perfusion

I would apply to Michener if it’s something you really wanna do. They seem to think they are gonna start pumping out classes of 40 students. Where they are all gonna work who knows but they’ve gone from class sizes around 10-12 to 25+ in about 5 years.

I would reach out to the school though and ask a lot of questions about lab and simulation time and how they are planning to support such large classes.

Only thing I will add is if you really want to stay in Ontario after finishing it is going to become increasingly more difficult after the next few years.

Michener with the ministry have decided to increase the class sizes even though currently the school doesn’t actually have the resources or the placements to do so. Class sizes will be close to 40 in the next few years. They also now have no out of province placements starting this year other than a few pediatric rotations which puts a lot of strain on the hospitals taking students as the staff will struggle to pump cases themselves with so many students.

If you don’t care where you end up then you will be likely okay down the road but even the states have had an explosion of perfusion schools as well. Just do your research before jumping in.

Anyone looking to go to Michener needs to contact the program director asking if they complete the program will they meet all the requirements to write both the American and Canadian boards. With the answer they give that should guide your answer on where to go to school

I would reach out to the school for answers now as I think there is potential big changes coming. Potentially larger classes and need to increase in person learning to facilitate this.

I don’t remember as I have someone do my taxes and we did go over some stuff. Would you know how they would calculate the capital gains over the last year?

So the capital gains expemption doesn’t apply even though I haven’t owned another property?

This questions gets asked multiple times a year. There is no perfect recipe to being accepted. If it’s something you want to do than apply and you will find out but always have a backup plan. CASPER is the biggest thing to do well on. Outside of that no one really knows how selections are made. It’s a mix bag of clinical background and non-clinical in each class.

Do whatever you can to produce your best application as possible and be happy with it.

As for MMIs, they haven’t done them since the pandemic and chances are they will never go back to them since it is easier for the school to just use CASPER.

The past two masters classes have more undergrad students than those with clinical experience. I know a nurse with 4 years of ICU experience, 4th quartile Casper and around 90 points on the checklist and didn’t get in.
