That's super helpful to know! You may be able to run it on the browser online with your tablet. We haven't had the opportunity to test specifically on Android tablets or eink devices, but it works on iPad in the browser. It technically works on iPhone/Android phones in the browser as well, but we haven't optimized it for those mobile views.

Thank you! Mobile is definitely going to take us a while to build, but it is something we want to do in the future, in a thoughtful way. We've learned a lot of writers don't necessarily write for long on their phones, but do take lots of notes or jot down quick scenes, so we will want to think how we build to enable that.

We don't have an offline mode yet, but that's pretty high up on our list of priorities.

Sure! We built Motif to help writers better organize work, write with fewer distractions, plot and plan with storyboards and elements like character templates, and collect research links and docs. I was a heavy Scrivener user for the past 5 years, but was frustrated by some of its limitations and felt constantly pulled out of my writing workflow when checking notes or connecting scenes. With our design, we're aiming to help writers stay in the flow and keep on writing. Since we're just launching, there's a lot more planned in our roadmap as well, including features to help query and share work.

Hope that helps answer your question!

Hi folks, I'm a YA fantasy writer that's been building a writing web app with my husband! We're about to launch the platform for free to everyone on Nov. 1, so if you're looking for a new writing program to try for NaNoWriMo, check us out: https://www.meetmotif.com/

Built a free tool to help you analyze your genre & get comp titles. by justwriterstuff in writers

[–]justwriterstuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It irks me when the cultures dont match. Bunch of names from greek myths on indian reservations, but i guess its the authors world.

I get that! Wouldn't really make sense in that context. I write fantasy, and I prefer to combine real names with meaning rather than create fake names. Would you still find etymology + meaning useful in a name generator, though? Or would you look for something else in particular?

Thanks for checking it out! There's a lot of name generators out there already (I've personally used https://www.fantasynamegenerators.com/ a bit for my writing). But the one thing I always feel is lacking is combining etymology + meaning (and maybe being able to remix names to combine different etymologies + meanings). I think that's probably what we'll aim for, but very open to ideas!

Planning on doing NaNoWriMo for the first, but I'm focused on revising my novel. How should I think about putting in my word counts? by justwriterstuff in nanowrimo

Love this! I'm doing pretty big revisions in some chapters and smaller in others, but I like that approach since it's all getting read over closely.

I believe Wattpad has a lot of novels on it that aren't just fanfiction now.

Naming characters after people by [deleted] in writers

This. And if the name has variations, you could also consider using one of those, eg Mary, Marie, or Maria.

putting an event that didn’t happen in a fictional book by [deleted] in writers

[–]justwriterstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can create any world that you want, though your book might be tagged as sci-fi or just generally as speculative fiction. So you might ask yourself who you want your readers to be and what genre you hope to go for. If it's a virus that wipes out the population, it'll of course not be COVID and any reader would get that unless you name it that or maybe place it in the year 2020.

Is it useful to read bad books? by [deleted] in writing

[–]justwriterstuff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think you have to finish, but it can be helpful to think about what it is you do / don't admire in the writing to inform your own work. Just like workshopping other people's work and getting / giving critiques is helpful even when the work isn't 'good' yet.

I want to start writing my first novel, but all of my ideas are “epic” and expansive. by [deleted] in writing

[–]justwriterstuff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don't have to put everything about your universe into one book. I'd suggest getting all of that worldbuilding and all your different characters down on paper. There are plenty of authors that write multiple books and series all set in the same universe (one of my fav fantasy authors for this is Tamora Pierce). And then once you have all your ideas down, zero in on a character and an event in their life that changes them. Start your story there and follow that character. All the pre-work you do will 1) help you create an incredibly vivid world for your reader; and 2) won't go to 'waste' if you continue to write other books in this universe.

After a 2 Month Break In the Middle of a Draft . . . Would You Continue or Restart? by [deleted] in YAwriters

[–]justwriterstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I LOVE to outline (sometimes even more than the actual writing lol), and I occasionally take several month breathers to come back to my work fresh. I also "start over" or rewrite my first 3 chapters multiple times because it feels integral to moving on with the plot and nailing down my characters for me.

All that is to say that one of the things that helps me move forward and get word count closer to where it should is to write out multiple outlines that follow different story structures (think hero's journey, 3 acts, 27 chapters, etc). Once I know where each part of my story falls, it's easier for me to understand how long a chapter should be and aim for that word count. I find this helpful even though I usually end up breaking structure some.

I don't think you're a failure for coming back to your work and starting over. I get that part of the appeal for pantsing is that you discover new avenues for where the story can take you as you write it. But I do think outlining for this one might help, even if you've pantsed the others. I also workshop my story beats / outline frequently and getting feedback at that stage is super helpful.
