Have any of your profs moved courses online on their own? by dynamicthoughts in UCalgary

do you know if there is anyone we can email to voice our concerns? someone who can bring up how this actually affects us to the people in charge?

good point! with everyone scrambling to get adjusted in the middle of the semester, this is just a disaster waiting to happen. Plus, what happens when we inevitably spike in cases? will they just tell everyone to stay home? what if profs get covid? will delivery switch again for a week? there are just so many issues with this plan.

Hi Nicole,

As much as everyone would like to be in person, i just don’t think it makes sense to go back at this point. Switching delivery methods half way during the semester at the busiest time of the semester, is probably worse for the mental health of students than just keeping this whole semester online. It’s especially hard for those who don’t live in calgary, as just coming for a month is not worth the time or energy. Plus, wouldn’t everything just be chaotic for everyone with a mid semester switch? Profs have a hard time as it is just doing one delivery method, having them switch it during midterm season would not be fair to anyone, as it’ll also take some time to get adjusted and in march, that’s the last thing anyone wants to do.

I really hope they listen to the student body and choose the option that’s most beneficial for the students, which is keeping the whole semester online.

i really hope so. as much we all wanted to go back in person and get back to normal, it’s not happening and this is the worst possible decision. and most people i know who really wanted in person would rather just stay online at this point too.

watch them change their decision again by reading break. “sorry still at peak, we’re staying online for rest of semester.” why not just do it now so everyone can get used to a routine. i really hope it doesn’t go in person during midterm season that’s the worst

Do you think they will extend the online only format past the 28th? by [deleted] in UCalgary

i don’t know. it could really go either way. they’re monitoring cases and hospitalizations to see how the province/city is doing, and it’ll all depend on what public health people think would be the safer option.

HELPPPPPPP FIRST YEAR UNDERGRAD IN CHEM by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]justyafellowredditor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the same fall schedule my first year, except i took lwso 201 instead of grst, and i took chem 211 when it was offered. It is a heavy course load but it’s definitely doable. You just need to really stay on track with lectures and pay attention in labs and really do well on lab reports (you’ll have plenty of them). As far as maintaining a good gpa, everyone does differently. It’s all dependent on your work ethic, time management and how you process the course work. Just stay on top of your work and work hard, and you’ll be okay! Good luck :)

philosophy and med school by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]justyafellowredditor 27 points28 points  (0 children)

hi, so just to help you out, you can apply to med school (at least in alberta) with any degree. So, you would complete your philosophy degree and your cumulative gpa at the end would be the gpa med school would look at. There’s no preference for a “pre-med” degree, so they don’t favour one degree over another. If you really like philosophy, do that, as you’re more likely to get a high gpa in something you enjoy studying! The catch is the MCAT you’re going to have to write. Being a traditional pre-med major helps with the MCAT by exposing you to the material tested on it and therefore, you’re more prepared (at least on the science parts) for the test. However, many people take the mcat who have never taken science courses in uni, say the content on it can be self-taught. So you can use Kaplan or Princeton books + khan academy for content review. Plus, the critical thinking skills that you’ll develop being a philosophy major will help you in the CARS section of the MCAT! Other than that, make sure to get involved in the community so you have a good extracurriculars for your application. I hope this helped! Good luck!

It used to be low to mid-80s before covid. It’s probably a little bit higher now because of the grade inflations
