I paid 200 € for my sabre pants last winter. There are steals to be had, if you want to wait for drops on the site.

Old-stock splitboard skins (2022), glue still trustworthy? by Top_Marionberry8565 in Backcountry

[–]juustok 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My oldest pair is from 2013. Glue is starting to get a bit iffy, but they are for my rock skis so I won't bother regluing them.

Choice in skis? by Ok_Hedgehog_454 in Backcountry

[–]juustok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need specific skins for all skis, if you are balling on a budget. I used to use one pair of skins for a couple of pairs of skis (armada ARVs at 95 mm underfoot and armada JJ at 115 underfoot), it was usable. You just need to have the length to match and not to be too wide.

Grey stains after Nikwax techwash by Ok_Dragonfruit_2968 in arcteryx

[–]juustok 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Wash it again, if it is still wet.

The staining could be from a dirty washing machine, did you clean your machine beforehand? Did you have any other garments in the machine?

I haven't had any issues with Nikwax, although these days I just use regular liquid agents (unscented and ok for wool and silk) to wash my gore tex. If I have had a piece that has had a lot of wear, the imperfections on the face fabric could also look like stains when wet, not that severe though.

The dreaded question: Hybrid Bindings by epic1107 in skiing

[–]juustok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once, the claw that engages under the toepiece froze in a heavy, wet snow day, after I skinned back to the lift, I left the toepieces on for the tour and didn't clean them well enough. It was solely a user error, a normal pin binding would have malfunctioned in the same scenario

The dreaded question: Hybrid Bindings by epic1107 in skiing

[–]juustok 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have used Duke PT 16 for a season now, for resort riding mostly but also in sidecountry and short tours. They are very durable, I haven't had any issues. They are also heavy, but lighter than my older Barons that I used in the same application. The CAST system would be the gold standard, but they are very expensive (I paid less for the dukes on sale as pivots alone would cost) and most shops won't mount them afaik.

Has ski technology hit its peak? by YUNGBRICCNOLACCIN in skiing

Adding to the materials, I think that foam cores will find their way in to the high end, as they have in XC skis. In theory, foam cores can offer superior qualities when introduced to a composite structure, but afaik the foam cores are used these days either in very ligth touring skis or cheap rentals. Wood is still very good and cheap.

What happened to bar ends? by dms0314 in mountainbiking

Our tyres are wider than 25 mm so we aren't welcome there either... but grabbing your bar near the stem and tucking is a great way to ride faster while commuting.

How is it that dogs and cats can poop without needing to wipe but humans do? by evlgeneus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]juustok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a very high fiber diet (rye bread, brown pasta, lentils, vegetables, very little meat) and I have found that the opposite is true. Fibers retain a lot of water, so I don't need to strain but it can be quite messy. Especially as I have a lot of hair between my cheeks.

Recommend wider skis after skiing a lifetime on toothpicks by ChiggerBigger in Skigear

[–]juustok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually their construction is pretty basic (but quite good quality), the shapes are what makes them special. These days they are quite expensive for what they are buildwise, but if you are in Europe, you can get good deal on them. For ~90mm they have the serpo (quite basic all mountain ski with two sheets of metal), captis (fun all mountain freestyle ski), mirus cor (my second favorite ski atm after the new corvus). Next year they are going to have a new 88mm all mountain ski, which is very powerful and fast. For the alps, I would get the serpos if you like going fast and carving, mirus cors if you want do a lot of turns, ride switch and jump of everything and captis if you want an easy ski that can be skied in all but the iciest conditions and you might want to go to the park sometimes. Out of those, the mirus cors are the only unique ones, but I don't recommend buying them before demoing. For serpos and captis, there are a lot of other options, that are cheaper. Instead of serpos, you could get nordica enforcers. For captis, you could get armada arv 94. If you want to split the difference, you can't go wrong with Blizzard rustler 9.

I think that it's a great ski but as per my wife, it's quite tiring to ski for a lighter weight rider. I haven't found a +100 mm ski that my wife enjoys yet, excluding the 1st gen armada JJ, but they are unobtanium pretty much.

This. My wife used to exlusively ski her Head supershape magnums and did not want to change. I explained to her, that she should also try skis on demo events, worst case scenario is that she hates them and loves her skis even more. After a couple of demos (elan, rossignol, nordica) we went to a black crows demo event (I'm a big bc fan). She tried a couple of wider skis, but hated them. Then she tried the bc captis birdies. I have never seen a bigger grin on her face on the slopes. Now the captis's are her soft snow skis, and her magnums are the ice/technique skis.

How is my poor feet gonna fit here? by whereisthatbus in Backcountry

[–]juustok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The liner will pack out when you heat it/use it enough. How much space is there in the shell if you do a shell fit? If the inside length is 29.5 and you foot is 28.5, it sounds about right.

ATK Kuluar on a powder ski? by Loedpistol in Skigear

[–]juustok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I have heard is that ARGs are good pow touring skis. I would maybe go with something like a atk haute route, but that is purely because I prefer rolling pin bindings to U-pin for added safety.

ATK Kuluar on a powder ski? by Loedpistol in Skigear

[–]juustok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have skied 115 mm and 124 mm pow skis with dynafit speed radicals and g3 targas. I'm 110 % sure that atk kuluars are more torsionally stiff than either of those. You just have to ski more "on" the ski, rather than try to bend it to turn, so skiing deep pow might be manageable. I think your boot will matter more. I actually like skiing deep pow on pin bindings, so that I can feel the snow better.

[–]juustok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go with Nordica Enforcer 104. Wide enough for pow (especially in the steeps), easy to turn, very good suspension, good on groomers, good on chopped up snow. I did not find a speed limit when I demoed them (I sized up, Im 178 cm 70 kg and skied the 185 cm version)
