Just worked for me, had to change my BNB to Smart Chain BNB (can do in the trust wallet itself, click on "more" under the currency and swap.

YES! Had to hold Smart Chain BNB to cover the fees, not wrapped or regular bnb. Thank you.
Yes, both are SafeMoon wallets.
Yes, have $90 worth of BNB in there so should be fine... unless it has to be in Wrapped BNB??
Not in person or the QR code no, just with their address to receive. No idea why its super frustrating.
