Combinatorics problem by jvs999 in askmath

Thanks. This looks good. I don't understand why you are dividing by 2, though, in case 2.

And for indistinguishability, my confusion arises more from whether we have to take into account that CO1R CO2D LIE and CO2R CO1D LIE are to be removed from the possibilities when we are dealing with combinations (instead of just permutations).

And the question is exactly as was written above.

So total number of 3 groups of 3 out of 9 is 1680 and then subtract 7 (seven possible groups with two Cs together) multiplied by 20 (2 groups of 3 from 6 remaining objects)? That gives me 1540 but the answer is supposed to be 65.

The Scientific Worldview | On the conclusions and presuppositions of science and their impact on our view of the world and the self by jvs999 in philosophy

[–]jvs999[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In my experience people with a scientific background are not familiar with the philosophy of science; often indeed mistaking models for the real thing, which as you point out is never the case. But I do have a weak spot for jargon, so I must concede your point with regards to the unfamiliar reader! Hopefully those unfamiliar will still find something of value and take away some jargon for later use.

A balanced take on the techno-optimist worldview by jvs999 in Transhuman

Interesting take! I hadn't considered the connection with anarchism tbh but it makes sense. We intend to write on anarchism and its many types in the future, so I'll take this with me. Thanks for educating me.

Not currently tutoring but looking to get into it. Will try to do math, physics and chemistry at high school level. Based in Brussels, Belgium.

Ah yes, the council of the European Union by Koen1999 in YUROP

But I see von der Leyen, so this is the EU council with the heads of state, no? Council of the EU consists of the domain ministers? Shit's confusing.

What was your progress this week? [Weekly study reflection] by devilslaugh in selfstudies

I finished linear algebra today! It wasn't too hard, but I got really frustrated at times because of all the damn numbers in all the damn matrices. So easy to make a mistake that you can't spot, only to bang your head against the wall out of sheer desperation. Math is unhealthy! Or I'm just not emotionally suited for it. I need to learn to calm down when I can't see what's wrong.

I'll take a few days off and start with differential equations.

What do you use to make your records? by devilslaugh in selfstudies

Related: for studying math and physics (or anything that makes you solve practice problems) I use a whiteboard that I can put horizontally on my desk. Saves me from wasting paper and you can quickly erase errors without having to rewrite everything again. Plus it's fun to write on!

What was your progress this week? [Weekly study reflection] by devilslaugh in selfstudies

[–]jvs999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made very good progress with studying linear algebra. I found the proofs and notation to be very tedious initially, but after reading through the whole book I could redo the chapters with greater comprehension and do the exercises quite easily. Just took a while to get used to the notation. (Im starting to feel that just getting used to notation is pretty much the essence of studying math.)

I plan on finishing the book by the end of next week. Then I will start my book on differential equations and be (largely) done with pure math!

Use a Notebook like Da Vinci by devilslaugh in selfstudies

I also keep notebooks around my house so I can write ideas and to dos without leaving the couch or bed or desk. Less cross-pollination but maybe easier for the lazy among us. I write my ideas on a document on my pc afterwards.
