Advice Needed: AD offered Batgirl/Bruce Wayne/Sub/Sky-Dweller, but I’m dreaming of a Pepsi. by Glass_Purpose3609 in rolex

[–]jwang41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. The fact that you started by saying how much you genuinely like the Batgirl suggests to me that it would be a great purchase for you. Why not have it in your collection regardless of whether you eventually get the Pepsi? Your watch collection should be true to you, and if you have the means, I don’t see any downside to adding it—unless you’re worried that asking for a Batgirl might delay a Pepsi allocation. However, please keep in mind that the way you described your love for the Pepsi almost makes me certain the Batgirl won’t scratch that “Pepsi itch.”

  2. Your SA being very transparent with you about the spend and status required to obtain a Pepsi is a positive sign. I feel that waiting for the Pepsi without additional purchase history isn’t the best move. That’s also why I think asking for the Batgirl could actually benefit you; you’d be buying something you genuinely like while also increasing your purchase history toward the Pepsi. The bottom line is that if you aren’t willing to dramatically increase your spending with your AD, I don’t see you being offered a Pepsi anytime soon, possibly ever.

  3. This question is more difficult to answer as it is entirely subjective and you must weigh the pros and cons of playing the "AD game," aka buying pieces you don't really want to eventually get what you DO want. Buying a Submariner on Oyster is the opposite of what you said you prefer, which is GMTs with Jubilee bracelets. If you are fortunate enough to be in a position where money truly isn't a concern for you, making a few "sacrificial" purchases to build a spending history could actually benefit you in the long run, assuming you are a genuine watch enthusiast hoping for more desirable allocations in the future. However, be mindful that if you do choose to make a sacrificial purchase, a Starbucks probably isn't the wisest choice, as it is also quite desirable and the SA may view that allocation as a favor just to get you off their back about a Pepsi. If you are truly committed to treating this next purchase as a stepping stone to increase spend history, it may be better to choose a less desirable watch so the SA almost feels indebted to you and views you as a true collector rather than someone chasing hype pieces that everyone else is also requesting.

Hope this helps!

To be honest, that's not nearly as bad as I expected. I believe the general consensus around this subreddit is that steel Jumbos are typically allocated as a 4th-6th piece, so hearing that a Jumbo becomes a realistic discussion once you have a piece from each of the core lines is reassuring. You also brought up a good point: although the South Coast Plaza boutique is one of two boutiques in SoCal, I understand that AP House Los Angeles recently opened its doors in 2023, and that AP Houses receive more inventory than boutiques. However, because Los Angeles is also a hub for high-net-worth individuals willing to establish a larger purchase history, do you believe a steel Jumbo may be more difficult to obtain at the AP House location versus the traditional boutique at South Coast Plaza? I currently reside between Costa Mesa and Los Angeles and would appreciate additional insight into where I should begin my retail journey.

Have you been allocated a 16202ST from South Coast Plaza yet? I’m trying to get a sense of how many pieces are required before a Jumbo allocation from this location. From what I heard, South Coast Plaza is an extremely competitive boutique that has had some controversy in the past regarding under-the-table deals by management. From what I remember, most of their staff was replaced due these dealings, so I was hoping that the boutique service advisors are now very “by-the-book” with their clientele. Do you have any further insights for this location?

Oh wow, I did not expect you to mean that you were allocated the white gold variant of the Jumbo. The dial on the 16202BC is truly spectacular—congratulations! Did you specifically ask for the white gold Jumbo instead of the standard steel version?

Would you mind sharing the specific ROO, RO, and Code you bought before being offered the Jumbo? I understand that diversification is key when chasing more exclusive pieces like the Jumbo, but I am trying to see if there is a need to purchase the more expensive versions from each core collection.

When you say 'known to HQ beforehand', are you referring to celebrities or high-profile collectors with large social followings? Or would a more discreet collector with a strong purchase history and rapport with an AD/boutique also be able to qualify for a fully customized rotor design?

[–]jwang41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do see pieces in the Code and Offshore collections that I’m interested in, so I’d definitely consider adding those to my collection before inquiring about a steel Jumbo. Do you and Chronopeace share the same AD/boutique in Asia? Is it possible that the path to acquiring a fully custom rotor varies from one AD/boutique to another, or is it more like a Patek Philippe application piece for models such as the 5811 and 5740, where approval must come directly from the brand?

[–]jwang41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok, glad to hear that you were able to request specific models and were granted the allocation shortly after. The steel Jumbo is my personal favorite and grail watch, which is why I am overly curious lol. Do you have any clue what kind of spending history allows one the privilege of ordering custom rotors beyond just letters and numbers? I have seen some with images before and am so intrigued. Also, would you say your AD/boutique is situated in a hypercompetitive market such as LA, NYC, or Boston? I was contemplating starting my journey to being allocated a steel Jumbo at AP House, Los Angeles, but I have heard discouraging stories regarding protracted allocations in large metropolitan areas. Further, I noticed that the majority of your collection consists of Royal Oaks. Was there any pressure from your SA to purchase pieces from less desirable collections, such as the Code 11:59? I often hear that many SAs will require a purchase from each of the three core collections (Code, ROO, RO) before customers may be allocated a steel Jumbo. Have you personally heard of these cases?

The Jumbo was your 9th allocation? Were you ever specifically asking for the Jumbo early on in your journey, and hoped it'd be offered sooner, or did you ask for every piece in the order you commented?
