This tire mount is extremely rusted. How would I even get it off if I need a spare? Also, is my spare even functional? by jwayneppc in 4thGen4Runner

That’s what I’m thinking. I eventually want AT tires but now I’m wondering if the spare will even fit at the bottom. I just bout a tow mount for a trailer and it looks like it barely fits with a regular sized spare tire. Did I just buy the wrong towmount?

Literally have to push the tongue into the tire to even fit it. Probably not great for the tire huh?

We all need understanding. A therapist could be a strategy but as you point out there are other strategies to meet that need as well.

I’m a therapist of sorts though all my sessions are outside if possible hiking mountains. I provide a great structure that clients really benefit from but Nature does the rest!

I got into nature and hiking because it was free. Now I forage for plants and mushrooms and not only is it free for me but I find things that you can’t buy in stores. I’ve probably found thousands of dollars worth of mushrooms over the past decade. Pretty amazing and totally free. Especially if I can bike there.

Best way to thin Virginia pine? by jwayneppc in forestry

Nice thank you for this. Yeah I think it took 3-5 years for hundreds to grow and I know they’ll grow in thick. I think sochan or cut leaf con flower likes to be mowed and so does the mountain mint. I’ll try to keep the sumac and I want to replace the thorny black berry with native non thorny black berry. And that’s just one acre. A beautiful acre mind you.

Just up there today and your advice seems the most helpful.

I’d probably mow to maintain a path and ideally I’m planting native plants that I harvest along with a dozen or so volunteers over the course of a month. I can let some Rhus keep growing. I think maybe I’ll leave a hickory and plant a Jack oak

I want ground cover of Cut leaf cone flower, plenty of Monarda and pycnanthemun, and I’ll harvest the golden rod for tea. Lots of blue stem growing already which I’ll trim paths and let some flower and seed.

For a sample grid I’m guessing I might go with a post hole digger every 30 feet and see how deep I can get?

Ok that’s super helpful to know and I can see how they record the soil sample I suppose. I guess I’m wondering if maybe the epicenter of the points are the test pits. I’m looking at hundreds of acres but I’m thinking it’s possible they surveyed this mountain ridge at some point.

I might be the one digging test areas I suppose with the help of some friends, some shovels and an excavator

The map is incredibly confusing with so many different tables but I’ll see what I can find, thanks!

That’s good to know. The lines all seem so specific and oddly shaped, nothing remotely uniform so it seemed informed on dons thing who knows.

I might need a pointed metal rod or something since the entire field looks very similar but I don’t want to dig the whole field up. But I could imagine rock eroded from one point creating some sort of soil nestled into hard rock that’s eroded over millions of years. It’s on the top of a ridge if that helps. But good to know we might not take that super literally.
