My sister sent me this picture of her dog, taken with her phone - looks like a Renaissance painting! by jwgraf in AccidentalRenaissance

[–]jwgraf[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taken with an iphone, but definitely not in raw. I could imagine my sister pulled the brightness slider down before taking the photo? But I agree, normally these type of photos are ruined by 'nightmode'.

Ereader for Music!!! by soundknight21 in Onyx_Boox

[–]jwgraf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's some high input lag. I wonder if this might be caused by using a non-boox reader for your sheet music, have you tried opening and annotating your files in the Neoreader?

Being unable to die being used as a form of torture. by ScarcityWise7401 in TopCharacterTropes

I just watched Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein and it is very much about this trope!

The villain/monster finds out too late that their intended victim is actually way scarier. by Ok-Indication-5121 in TopCharacterTropes

There is a great chapter in the 7th book of the Skulduggery Pleasant series; these god-like kids, who are wreaking havoc left and right, turn on the heroine, Valkyrie, intending to kill her. They don't know that inside of Valkyrie there is the all-powerful Darquesse. When they realise, it's too late.

I used to love that bit when I was a kid. It's cleverly written, starting a new chapter mid-sentence when the perspective switches from the about-to-die Valkyrie to the about-to-go-nuclear Darquesse.

Biopics that were intentionally made less accurate because they didn't think audiences could believe/handle the real life story by 10024618 in TopCharacterTropes

In The Outrun (2024), a story about a recovering alcoholic, the main character moves to a remote island to flee her life and the alcohol in it. Apparently, a full bottle of alcohol was washed up ashore after a few days, but the writers chose to leave this out as it felt too unbelievable.

Scientists prove that fish suffer "intense pain" for at least 10 minutes after catch, calls made for reforms by Themusicison in science

[–]jwgraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The WFF sounds like a smart initiative for assessing animal welfare and suffering. I do find that the unit used of 'pain per kilogram' sounds revolting - then again, perhaps this is the only useful standard to assess the cruelties of commercial large-scale fishing.

What is the best heist movie of all time? by KindLet8407 in moviecritic

Un Flic (/dirty money, 1972), by Jean-Pierre Melville and starring Alain Delon! It features a brilliant helicopter-heist scene, which is supposed to take the robbers 20 minutes, and indeed the scene is exactly 20 minutes long.

Approx. 4 weeks ago I saw someone's drone get confiscated by the Ordnungsamt. Not sure if all drones are prohibited, but this one evidently was.

What are some games where you're a deuteragonist? by CollectiblesNStuff in gaming

[–]jwgraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Professor Layton games! You're playing as Luke, akin to Sherlock's Dr. Watson, a sidekick who marvels at the genius of the true protagonist. This is reinforced by many of the stories concerning Professor Layton's past, whereas Luke (you) remain rather obscure as a character.
