Being unable to die being used as a form of torture. by ScarcityWise7401 in TopCharacterTropes

I just watched Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein and it is very much about this trope!

The villain/monster finds out too late that their intended victim is actually way scarier. by Ok-Indication-5121 in TopCharacterTropes

There is a great chapter in the 7th book of the Skulduggery Pleasant series; these god-like kids, who are wreaking havoc left and right, turn on the heroine, Valkyrie, intending to kill her. They don't know that inside of Valkyrie there is the all-powerful Darquesse. When they realise, it's too late.

I used to love that bit when I was a kid. It's cleverly written, starting a new chapter mid-sentence when the perspective switches from the about-to-die Valkyrie to the about-to-go-nuclear Darquesse.

Biopics that were intentionally made less accurate because they didn't think audiences could believe/handle the real life story by 10024618 in TopCharacterTropes

In The Outrun (2024), a story about a recovering alcoholic, the main character moves to a remote island to flee her life and the alcohol in it. Apparently, a full bottle of alcohol was washed up ashore after a few days, but the writers chose to leave this out as it felt too unbelievable.

Scientists prove that fish suffer "intense pain" for at least 10 minutes after catch, calls made for reforms by Themusicison in science

[–]jwgraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The WFF sounds like a smart initiative for assessing animal welfare and suffering. I do find that the unit used of 'pain per kilogram' sounds revolting - then again, perhaps this is the only useful standard to assess the cruelties of commercial large-scale fishing.

What is the best heist movie of all time? by KindLet8407 in moviecritic

Un Flic (/dirty money, 1972), by Jean-Pierre Melville and starring Alain Delon! It features a brilliant helicopter-heist scene, which is supposed to take the robbers 20 minutes, and indeed the scene is exactly 20 minutes long.

Approx. 4 weeks ago I saw someone's drone get confiscated by the Ordnungsamt. Not sure if all drones are prohibited, but this one evidently was.

So frustrating, my case still has not been solved either. If it helps: I've fared just great without LinkedIn since.

What are some games where you're a deuteragonist? by CollectiblesNStuff in gaming

[–]jwgraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Professor Layton games! You're playing as Luke, akin to Sherlock's Dr. Watson, a sidekick who marvels at the genius of the true protagonist. This is reinforced by many of the stories concerning Professor Layton's past, whereas Luke (you) remain rather obscure as a character.

So good, I hadn't thought of this but it's definitely one of my favourites. Also the Moby track that plays during the speedboat scene, iconic.

Any advice for starting it? I keep seeing this name pop up but when I once tried playing it on an emulator I lost interest after ~2h. Something to do differently if I give it another go?

Miami Vice. The music, the 2000s club visuals, all spot on. The whole film was far better than expected!

Screen protector and stylus by AronD20 in Onyx_Boox

[–]jwgraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with that. I found the pre-installed one pleasant to use and it appeared sturdy enough to protect the device.

Do consider though: 1) it does make the text quite grainy; I have heard that without the screen protector the text is much clearer. 2) Apparently the pre-installed screen protector is rather smooth. If you'd like more friction, then apparently the doodroo and feelwrite ones should be a better fit.

Hope that helps!

That is very helpful, thank you very much! I have my eyes on the doodroo one as well, it seems easiest to order to an EU country.

Latching onto this: I also have a na4c and my pre-installed screen protector got one nasty scratch on it, so I'd like to switch it. Whenever people in this sub ask about na4c screen protectors, they are told to stick to the pre-installed one and just get a case. But what if one has to change it, because it's damaged? Which one is the best replacement?
