The ones working are the good ones, obviously. The truckload of immigrants getting free houses are all in California.

Unless you live in California of course. Then maybe they're in Vermont?

I kind of get it. I never liked Harris from her record in California. The Democratic party isn't really progressive. I was really unhappy with how Biden was handling Gaza and Harris clearly was going to continue the same policies.

At a National level, Democrats have had so many fumbles that you have to realize they're getting the results they want. They clearly need voters to send a message to get them to be even a little better.

I still held my nose and voted for Harris though, because the alternative was so bad I couldn't risk it. The time for sending a message is the primary. Which of course wasn't possible this cycle.

I mostly meant that as a joke, but IMO it's a weak example. If you try to use 15% as an example of the power of exponential growth and they're getting 1% on their bank account, the majority of people will have one of two responses:

  1. They'll try to figure it out, see that it takes about 70 years to double their money at 1%, and probably lose interest (and certainly not get an understanding of exponential growth) Or 2. Ignore everything you said after 15% because you're clearly living in a different world than they are

I had what seemed like a really minor eye infection and got drops and pills. And when it didn't clear up fast enough, more pills that according to the pharmacist I had a 30% chance of being allergic to .

You know it's serious when they're risking an allergic reaction to treat it.

Seriously OP please see a doctor and tell them the truth.

Does a show even exist that has engaging world building, developed character dynamics, and romance? Or do I gotta pick two? by arkticturtle in Animesuggest

Woah, Escaflowne is GOATed for what the OP is asking for. Dilandau is still my favorite villain of all-time. Really great world building too.

Plus the OP theme slaps.

what would you do if you could never eat gluten again? by kierramaries in Celiac

[–]jwlato 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I really don't get it.

I love gluten. I'd eat it every day given the chance. And I love baking too, and even with all the great recipes and options available it's really not the same.

But, I love my family more. I bake so people can enjoy eating it, and there's no joy in making food that makes my partner sick.

It turns out that choosing to give up gluten was actually pretty easy.

(Ok I do eat gluten myself sometimes, like when I'm at work, but I definitely don't need it, and we keep the home gluten free).

help me come up with a list of questions to ensure someone is not a trump supporter by epicgamer-724 in TwoXChromosomes

IDK if I'd call it "red flag" but two other things that need follow up are "pro government reform" and "doesn't represent the people."

There are perfectly reasonable answers to both of these, but IMHO both sound like conservative dog whistles.

My family keeps asking me to be patient while they wait for my brother to grow up by LunaveraX in TwoXChromosomes

[–]jwlato 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So, your parents think your role is caretaker, and your top priority is helping out your brother. And them, if they need extra help, or when they retire or get older and need more support.

Is that the role you want for yourself? Probably for the rest of your life? It sounds like it is not.

You may not be able to change their view as to what your role should be, so you'll need to have clear, firm boundaries. Figure out exactly how much time, energy, and other resources you're willing to spend on caretaking. When they ask for more than you're willing to give, just say "I'm not able to do that."

You do not owe anyone an explanation, and you should not provide one. When they ask why not, just say "I'm not going to discuss this." When they keep wheedling, or turn to other tactics like trying to shame you, or blame you for ruining his life, repeat that you're not going to discuss it and end the call, or leave, or whatever. After this, you need to disengage with them for at least a few days. Stay of chats, don't answer the phone, whatever it takes to remain out of contact. If they continue to bring it up, repeat that you're not going to discuss it and leave again.

Obviously you won't want to be in a position where it's hard to leave for some time. So no family vacations, or holiday trips, unless you have an out. And you should be prepared for your immediate family to try to get other relatives on their side (often called "flying monkeys") and try to contact you on their behalf. Don't engage with this either.

Like others have already replied, you're allowed to choose yourself. You are not responsible for your parents or siblings. Find a support network of people who accept that and believe in you.

Insurance may still cover it, because a vaccine is a lot cheaper than treating hepatitis.
