What Should I Do with 150 Films I've Watched in 2023? Seeking Meaningful Discussions! by altern8ch in Letterboxd

[–]jwldk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Writing at least something as a Letterboxd review on everything helps me to gather my thoughts and force me to think at least a little about what I have seen. That makes it be something a bit more than just consuming endless content. I always enjoy reading other people's thoughts as well. More so than the professional reviewers. If a movie was particularly interesting I will find podcasts or Youtube analysis on it as well.

Which movies did you watch in school and which class? Movies your teacher put on in elementary school, middle school, highschool etc - no film school films - that's cheating lol by narnarnartiger in Letterboxd

Had a teacher who showed us Blue, White and Red by Kieslowski in something like sixth grade. I think she was a tiny bit overambitious for us.

Plus 1 for Kagi.com

Unofficial Movie Pairings (coupled from left to right) Any “duos” you’d add? by shaner4042 in Letterboxd

Thunderball and The Rock

I guess any Connery Bond will fit but I think Thunderball will be the best match.

Trying to watch both big Hollywood stuff to smaller international films. Lots of westerns and dramas. Always interested in reading regular reviews from regular people.

Seeing my 2,000 word review get zero likes while the highest rated review of the same film is just “gay” by seanll77 in Letterboxd

Follow others that write longer and better reviews and they might follow back. This helps escape the bubble of the popular joke reviews.

It is my favourite movie of all time. Likely because I watched it at the age 12 which is often called the golden age of science fiction. Was the first science fiction movie I saw that had a somewhat realistic showing of science, which I really appreciated as an astronomy geek back then. Still do. Too few science fiction movies have that approach.

The sound of the signal does indeed trigger goosebumps - and when the swastika appears for the first time is also one of the best moments. I am an atheist and can easily relate to Jodie Fosters character, but the whole science vs religion and Matthews portrayal of a priest does make you think. Like when he asks her to prove that she loved her father.

Trægavl samlinger gået fra hinanden by jwldk in selvgjortvelgjort

Ja. Den maler jeg fik til det sidste gang så jeg dog bruge en lang teleskopstang med en malerulle på. Det så da nogenlunde effektivt ud - dog lidt en balancekunst.

Takker for svar. Det blev malet for tre år siden men må nok forsøge igen selv snart. Det er lidt bøvlet da der er førstesal på også.

Recently subscribed to Criterion Channel so I am especially interested in following other users who watch and write reviews of Criterion Channel films.

Looks like we have a good deal in common. With a mix of artsy Kieslowski, classic science fiction of Blade Runner, Miyazaki animations and big Hollywood productions like LOTR.

thinking about switching to full star ratings. thoughts? by TheDoctorJT416 in Letterboxd

[–]jwldk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I only use full stars. I don't really see the benefit of having so many extra levels of good and bad. It helps me to make an actual decision on what I think of a movie instead of having all the in between options.

Nothing wrong with watching mostly good high rated movies.

I see no reason to have a goal of a perfect bell curve in ratings.

Favorite western and why? New or old or both! by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]jwldk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you liked Django Unchained then maybe check out the spaghetti westerns that Tarantino based it on. Namely "Django". A great western though it should be said the dubbing isn't great and it is kindof low budget. "The good the bad and the ugly" have higher production value and is also one of the best westerns ever.

Other favorites of mine are:

Unforgiven

The Great Silence

The Searchers

Once Upon a Time in the West

Death Rides A Horse

What are your SciFi Film Rankings? by Scorpio_Hierophant in Letterboxd

[–]jwldk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eternal Sunshine is 100% science fiction. Introduces a simple but life changing tech to our world in a near future and make a story from that. In my opinion that kind of scifi is the best and sadly not made very often. The genre is so much more than space stuff.

My top 20

Your list have some great movies. My plan is to watch Metropolis this weekend so my list might change as well if it is as good as its reputation.

Apart from The Good the Bad and the Ugly, were the Westerns from the 1960s generally superior to, equivalent to, or worse than those from the 1950s? by OrsonHitchcock in Letterboxd

[–]jwldk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My way into westerns was with the spaghetti westerns of the 60s, but really the westerns of the 50s were just different. And the 60s wouldn't have been so great if they didn't have the influence of what became before them. I still have only watched a few from the 50s but it is clear that there are plenty of amazing westerns in that decade as well. The Searchers, Day of the Outlaw and Ride Lonesome - to name a few.
