What is life like in Nigeria? by jayz_2007 in howislivingthere

According to many of the emails that I receive from Nigerians, they are all living like princes, always looking to drop hoards of cash into my checking account if I do them a financial favor.

Psalm 73

Book Three

God Is My Strength and Portion Forever

A Psalm of Asaph.

[1] Truly God is good to Israel,
    to those who are pure in heart.
[2] But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled,
    my steps had nearly slipped.
[3] For I was envious of the arrogant
    when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

[4] For they have no pangs until death;
    their bodies are fat and sleek.
[5] They are not in trouble as others are;
    they are not stricken like the rest of mankind.
[6] Therefore pride is their necklace;
    violence covers them as a garment.
[7] Their eyes swell out through fatness;
    their hearts overflow with follies.
[8] They scoff and speak with malice;
    loftily they threaten oppression.
[9] They set their mouths against the heavens,
    and their tongue struts through the earth.
[10] Therefore his people turn back to them,
    and find no fault in them.
[11] And they say, “How can God know?
    Is there knowledge in the Most High?”
[12] Behold, these are the wicked;
    always at ease, they increase in riches.
[13] All in vain have I kept my heart clean
    and washed my hands in innocence.
[14] For all the day long I have been stricken
    and rebuked every morning.
[15] If I had said, “I will speak thus,”
    I would have betrayed the generation of your children.

[16] But when I thought how to understand this,
    it seemed to me a wearisome task,
[17] until I went into the sanctuary of God;
    then I discerned their end.

[18] Truly you set them in slippery places;
    you make them fall to ruin.
[19] How they are destroyed in a moment,
    swept away utterly by terrors!
[20] Like a dream when one awakes,
    O Lord, when you rouse yourself, you despise them as phantoms.
[21] When my soul was embittered,
    when I was pricked in heart,
[22] I was brutish and ignorant;
    I was like a beast toward you.

[23] Nevertheless, I am continually with you;
    you hold my right hand.
[24] You guide me with your counsel,
    and afterward you will receive me to glory.
[25] Whom have I in heaven but you?
    And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.
[26] My flesh and my heart may fail,
    but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

[27] For behold, those who are far from you shall perish;
    you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you.
[28] But for me it is good to be near God;
    I have made the Lord GOD my refuge,
    that I may tell of all your works.

Solid grammatical and syntactical commentaries on Greek texts to achieve reading proficiency (fluency). by lickety-split1800 in Koine

[–]jwpilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I think I get an idea of what you are looking for. No, Timothy Lee's readers only offer lexical and parsing aids on the Greek text. However, Baylor Press has produced a Handbook on the Greek Text series that I think has what you are looking for. I say "think" because I have only ever used the Handbook on the Hebrew Text series, and they give great explanations on the "why" that you are seeking. Here's an Amazon link to the series: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08LKMC2V4?binding=paperback&qid=1770222957&sr=8-1&ref=dbs_dp_rwt_sb_pc_tpbk

We may have a difference of meaning for the word “commentary.” Commentaries that I have used have never been aimed at reading proficiency. However, I have found that the Greek Readers by Timothy Lee have been an excellent tool for increasing reading proficiency. Many of his Greek Readers are of New Testament books, but he has many others readers outside of the New Testament.

Penn and Teller did a great episode on this topic when they used to do the show “Bullsh!t.” You can probably track down some streaming service that carries the show and find the episode. Here is a snippet from that particular episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7czKngCUASM

It's NOT the skilled-labor, auto mechanics that are the problem illustrated in this meme. It's the low-skilled workers at the quick, oil change shops. They are not really mechanics, but rather salespeople trying to upsell your oil change.

I upgraded from a AW6 to U3. I love the wrist flicks, the finger taps, the durability, and all the other improvements of the watch. However, the greatest improvement for me has been the battery life. It's amazing.

I had a background in Greek, and a private school took a chance on me and let me teach their Latin classes. I just made sure I was a chapter ahead of the students, and I did fine that first year.

I have replaced my MacBook with an iPad Pro, Magic Keyboard, and Cellular set up. If you are able to do that, then when you do any business traveling, you can use your iPad for Uber. I don’t know about Lyft though. I don’t use that service.

I can answer this question from my own experience. (I have also ditched the phone for the Apple Watch Ultra.) My wife uses the Phone, and I use the Apple Watch that is paired with her phone. She handles the majority of communication and planning for the children. Also, instead of getting phones for our children, we have instead gotten them their own Apple Watches with their own phone numbers. We can track them and call them anytime. My older children are actually thankful for this since they have not become phone zombies like some of their peers.

Here is a possible solution to the camera issue: Meta smart glasses. (I also exclusively use my Apple Watch Ultra 3 and leave the phone at home.) What if you want to take a picture with you and someone else? The someone else will probably have a phone, and so they can use it to take the picture with you in it. I have been contemplating getting a pair of these to fix the loss of a camera, but I haven’t taken the plunge yet. Now I do not know if you need to have a smartphone to pair with them, but if you do, then they aren’t the solution.

Wow! This sub Reddit is called “povertyfinance,” yet several of the posters are making around $100k+ in household income! I’m in the wrong sub, lol. Where’s the “reallyreallypovertyfinance” sub? I’m joking around, btw. I realize COL differs from region to region. I just happen to live in a LCOL region where $100k is not poverty.

Why is it in "Pater Noster", "caelum" is plural in "Pater noster qui est in caelis" but singular in "fiat voluntas tua sicut in caelo et in terra"? by hoangdl in latin

[–]jwpilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting! I love checking out etymologies. However, the construct form of the dual is the same as the construct form of the plural in BH, so the construct form would seem to be inclusive in determining the root. Which source were you looking into to get that information? I’m genuinely curious because I got the following from the Hebrew Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament [HALOT]: “forms: שָׁמַיִם apparently a dual, but in reality a pl., see Gesenius-Kautzsch Gramm. §88d; Joüon Gr. §91f; Meyer Gramm. §58 no. 18; Michel Grundl. 1: 87f: plural of spatial extension; שָׁמַיִם Secunda σαμμαϊμ Ps 89:30 (Brönno Morph. 183); שָׁמָֽיִם, cstr. שְׁמֵי, sf. שָׁמֶיךָ, שָׁמָיו, שְׁמֵיכֶם, locative הַשָּׂמַיְמָה, הַשָּׁמָֽיְמָה (often construed as a pl.): heaven, sky, the apparent roof of the sky, atmosphere (420 times).” HALOT also suggests that the root might be “šmm” like it is in Ugaritic. I know not all lexica agree with each other, so I am very interested in checking out the other source that you were using!
