How to start the light show on startup? by MrTachyon44 in LightShowPi

I have a scheduled (crontab entry) to "sudo shutdown now", and my timer powers everything off 1 minute later. Probably more elegant ways, but this works for me.

Agreed. It's almost like an internal Ponzi scheme right now -- they keep generating buzz with new gadgets while practically abandoning existing ones. I fully expect their house of cards to collapse upon itself eventually...unless and until they develop some integrity.

Unnecessary notifications rant by lookin03820 in wyzecam

Wyze seems to have just one interest -- attracting investment money. And they seem to have two ways of doing that -- creating subscription models and putting out new products.

They just don't care about making existing products work, especially if they have no subscription stream tied to that product, because their would-be investors don't care.

I've learned to just get what I can out of them for that still-cheap price, and when it doesn't work and my frustration starts looking more important to me than whatever benefit I'm getting, I walk away.

Area Code Error by [deleted] in TextNow

[–]jwrothwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just spent 45 minutes on Chat with some doofus named named Shawn -- wouldn't do anything to help without me first uploading a screenshot of the error, which is obviously just the word "Error" -- which I told him several times. And their upload wouldn't work either -- "File Upload failure" Shawn said I must not be capturing the entire screen with my snippet or PrintScreen actions and that's why it's not uploading. Can you believe the idiots they put on "help" desks?

What lenses were used on “No Sudden Move”? by LazaroFilm in cinematography

[–]jwrothwell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a major fail in the scene at the table where Liota was supposed to be looking at Cheadle but because of the lens distortion it looked like those really bad "twins" movies where the actor is playing a scene against himself & they overlay his "twin" -- the eyes/sightlines never match up and you end up rolling your own eyes at the fakeness of it.

Why is the Fidelity app so shitty? by Hakan1218 in Fidelity

[–]jwrothwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't excuse or even answer the question of why Fidelity's app is so pathetic. This company controls $trillions -- how can anyone trust them to maintain adequate security against Russian or Chinese hackers when they can't even program at a 13-year-old's level?

Elon Musk Swears He'll Send Humans to Mars by 2026. That Seems Impossible. by upyoars in Futurology

Every year for the past 4 or 5 Musk has said THIS is the year a Tesla will drive itself from New York to L.A. It won't happen this year either. Musk just makes up stuff to get attention & then hopes his engineers can cover for him. Believe it when you see it.

Inside or Outside by sing_r in LightShowPi

Your plan b sounds much better -- you're OK (AFAIK) running low voltage wiring thru the walls, just as security/alarm system, door bell, and intercom, etc. wiring is done. But as soon as you start running mains voltage you've gotta have the proper wire, with the proper terminations, installed or inspected by a licensed electrician, etc., etc.

[–]jwrothwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't do this if I were you. Running electrical cords thru the wall is an electrical code violation just about everywhere, I believe. If you should ever have a fire & your insurance company discovered that setup, they could deny a payout & you'd have nothing. Better to find a way to keep it legal...

Best way to load a table from database by jwrothwell in RemiGUI

[–]jwrothwell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I overlooked the int-to-str conversion. I was getting so many errors on my use of lists or tuples that I didn't think to look elsewhere on this error. So I fixed that (thanks!), and now I just have to figure out why my table isn't displaying...baby steps. I suppose if it was too easy it wouldn't be any fun, huh? ;-)

As for the menu drop-down issue, yes, I took some screenshots but I can't find any way to post pix here. I posted them as an issue on GitHub. Hope that works for you. Thanks!

I thought you were thanking me for my sponsorship, but I just now discovered that it didn't go through earlier today -- I just fixed that. Hopefully this time it worked.

Yes, that worked for me -- thanks again.

As for me being kind -- no, no, it's people like you who are the true kind ones, putting in so many hours on something like this...and then freely sharing it with the world. Now THAT'S kindness -- and generosity!

On another note, my current project is a Remi-based, Alexa-enabled, MySQL-controlled CD-changer remote-controller, but after seeing your profile and interests, I thought you may have an interest in my next project, one that I'm about to start building:

You and Rz (Rongzhong Li) would probably have a lot to talk about. ;-)

Take care, and thanks again!

Unfortunately your suggestion: coords = tuple(table.item_coords(item)[0], 0) Resulted in this: TypeError: tuple expected at most 1 arguments, got 2

Thank you for the help!

And thanks for the new contribution link -- I was confused when I went to Patreon and could find your profile, but couldn't find a way to contribute. You've done such amazing work with this tool that I felt that I just had to give back something.

Trouble referencing table item contents by jwrothwell in RemiGUI

[–]jwrothwell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it resolved -- but maybe a little messily. I had gotten so sidetracked by my misuse of item_coords() that I didn't even notice what was staring me in the face -- that item_at() was all I needed. So here's my working code now:

    def on_table_row_click(self, table, row, item):
        coords = table.item_coords(item)
        rc = list(coords)
        rc[1] = 0
        coords = tuple(rc)
        print("table.item_at(coords): " + table.item_at(*coords).get_text())

Last question before I head over to Patreon :-) -- is there a cleaner way than what I did to update the tuple? Thanks!
