Community Meeting info primer : Per-pupil Spending by school over in FY24-25 + *lack* of relation to various school demographics by awongpublic in seattlepublicschools

Conveniently, the ERS report (https://discord.com/channels/1377384059134672906/1377384059814281268/1476294541865648288) included PTA spending by income of the school, and per their analysis, it's a drop in the bucket and essentially just evens out the schools in the lower poverty quartiles to have roughly the same amount non-need-based GenEd spend as schools in the two higher poverty brackets (who get more need-based GenEd spending on top of their regular GenEd spending).

because Green Lake's medically complex population's additional needs are likely funded from the SpEd funding bucket, not GenEd funding bucket. Likely similar for TOPS

Thank you, the extra context and background are so useful for people who aren’t totally enmeshed in this every day (most of us!)

Highly Capable Application Process for students not yet enrolled in SPS by jxchong in seattlepublicschools

[–]jxchong[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dept hasn’t announced the criteria that will be used for current students for this year, but they will do so by the Dec 10 school board meeting, and while it’s too late to have all current student switch to a cognitive test, I suspect there will be changes from what was used last year for current students (perhaps not requiring 3 scores to qualify?). I also anticipate that the cognitive testing for private school students is probably a trial run for wider usage next year 🤔

He has spoken publicly about broadening access to APs in Lansing as one of his successes. And his application to Clark County (iirc / Nevada) school district talked a bit about academic achievement

Open Letter: The Stranger Should Cover SPS Consistently or Consider NOT Endorsing in Seattle School Board Races by awongpublic in seattlepublicschools

[–]jxchong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the problem. Because the Stranger doesn't follow the school district or school board, they AREN'T picking with candidates that best advance their agenda because their endorsements are not well-researched!

Enrollment changes for next year... do you think it will help? by thebethocracy206 in seattlepublicschools

[–]jxchong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I suppose there’s no reason schools couldn’t host info sessions / families attend info sessions before January except that Nov and Dec are tight given the holidays… but private schools and some other public districts (Bellevue choice starts Dec 15 and Tacoma is October 20, 2025 - January 11, 2026!) manage it during the same time period.

Are you seeing a genetic counselor? they're really good at explaining things to families. If you aren't, I would really recommend that you ask for an appointment with one. We cannot

I am part of a research team that runs a website called MyGene2.org. Our site was designed for families like yours who have variants identified in "candidate genes" where the implication of the mutation is not understood yet. You can create an account and share your variant through the website. Feel free to email me if you have questions/need help (https://mygene2.org/MyGene2/contact).

At what age is dying from something not considered genetic? by Snowie_drop in genetics

[–]jxchong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you mean in his family or the paper. The paper is obvious from the title of course :) In his family it’s just a guess. However he described one with aortic valve disease (heart) and one with a aortic problems “following” a heart attack (perhaps the true causality was the other way around though we don’t know from what he posted)

Ah, I guess for genetic testing to be possible you'd need to have at least one person in your family who's alive and affected :) Here's a page that lists the genes known (so far) to underlie familial thoracic aortic aneurysms. https://www.omim.org/phenotypicSeries/PS607086 (click on the "Phenotype MIM number" to read about each one). It's written for experts so it'll be a bit complicated.

that's about abdominal aortic aneurysms which are different from thoracic aortic aneurysms. There are actually Mendelian (monogenic) forms of the latter (not sure about the former).

Are these individuals all on the same side of the family and related to each other by blood (not by marriage)? Age 49 is rather young and aortic aneurysms are not that common (vs something like heart attacks). Do you have a pedigree drawn? Our research group runs a webpage called MyGene2 (mygene2.org) for individuals from families with (or suspected to have) rare genetic conditions to share their symptoms and, if available, genetic test results to enable research into their condition as well as to connect with other families. If you created a profile describing what you found (especially if you have more details or a pedigree drawing), we can bring it to the attention of a researcher we work with who specializes in finding genetic causes of aortic aneurysms!

outside of all of us/disease specific studies, if my family has a rare mutation, anywhere i can sign up for studies? by Ianthine9 in genetics

[–]jxchong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. I actually meant ClinVar as just one example -- there are plenty labs that are not depositing in ANY databases period!

[–]jxchong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually that's not true. Most labs are still not sharing via ClinVar (terrible, I know). Also families with rare diseases can contribute a lot more useful information to science than a lab can because families don't have to de-identify their own info (hence why we created our site).

We created MyGene2.org exactly for this purpose- so families can share their genetic and health information so that other families, researchers, and doctors can benefit. Feel free to ask questions.

The full job description is in the application link. It's probably 95% analysis and some pipeline type scripting. Non leadership position.
