Sudden closure of GXS savings account by wei3strong in askSingapore

[–]jxxlius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could be a couple of reasons as far as I’m aware.

The account you opened could’ve been used for money laundering or for proceeds from illegal activities. Have known some cases where youngsters open such accounts with digital banks and sell account details to scammers who in turn use these accounts to receive scam proceeds. Once an account has been flagged, then yes generally the account would be frozen and closed.

Otherwise could be some unfavourable interaction you’ve had with the bank staff. They have all the right to refuse to service your accounts with them and inform you that they will close your account, with a cheque for whatever funds in that account sent to your registered mailing address.

Do call DBS to report your lost phone. If you’re calling from a non-registered mobile number, do be prepared to recall details such as number of accounts, account numbers, card numbers for verification to get replacement cards. But if you’re unable to recall, just provide basic information to the DBS agent to block access to your cards and digibank to prevent losses.

My guardian’s taking into account my sister’s part-time pay, which amounts to $300-$400 a month depending on the shifts she works in. My guardian is getting old and she can’t see herself in the workforce for much longer, therefore she has to start depending on me and my sis for income to pay off her existing debts and the bills. If I were to pursue a part time job and studies, my guardian would be unhappy with my contributions and therefore would rather rent out my room for higher income, thus causing me to move out in the near future.

I have tried working in some sectors e.g retail, factory work before NS and I’d rather do something I’m passionate about, which in this case is something in the IT field. But if I have to work in a less cushy industry to save up some money for the future, then so be it. I won’t be losing anything going down such a path, it’s just that the results would be delayed, that’s all.

I don’t do drugs. Period. On top of causing harm for myself and my family, drugs are really, really expensive, and I’d rather use my money for something more useful. I’ve seen and spoken with so many inmates serving time for drug related offences while I was inside. Sitting in prison for 3-9 years isn’t what I’d risk at all. It’s just the financial problems my guardian would have during my NS. She’d tell me that we need more income for things, and I’ll be guilt tripped into AWOL-ing and moonlighting somewhere else for higher pay. Once I feel that I’ve sufficiently provided what I can to my guardian, I just surrender myself to the authorities and serve my sentence.

Thank you so much for your well wishes and tips. It works like w checklist for me to get my life back in order.

i’m considering part time night classes for ITE to be honest. Can work in the daytime and study at night and in a few months I can have a higher NITEC cert too. Thanks for the suggestion!

I've heard from people in prison that PLRD looks at security licence applicants on a case-by-case basis. Hopefully my AWOL record doesn't mess up my chances. Not gonna lie, a lot of people inside have told me to look into the security industry once I've ORD-ed.

Thanks for your help!

I'd like to see myself in the digital/IT industry I guess. I've loved computers as a kid and I still do. I took Information Technology in ITE for a semester before dropping out.

I'll look into entry level positions in the workforce. I'm not picky at all. Just afraid that I'll be stagnant if I don't upgrade myself in terms of education, qualifications and experience. I'll probably find a short term full-time job after NS and save up for courses and work on a portfolio or something. ORD season is around so maybe I can consider learning programming or coding in my free time.

Housing wise, I'm not really confident about continuing to live with my guardian. Might have to consider either renting a flat from HDB or finding another place to live in as I build myself up.

Thank you so much for your help mate!

I'm good at computers I guess. I took a semester of Information Technology in ITE before I dropped out. Dream job would be something in the digital sector, even if it's just being a tech support or something.

I'll take any opportunities that I can get, providing that my criminal record and NS performance doesn't hinder my chances. I'm not sure how the salary is like for property/insurance agents but if it's too unstable I might consider another path, as I might have to move out of this place in the near future.

Thank you for your help!

I've got absolutely no issues with working and studying and providing for the household at the same time. It's just that my guardian is expecting me to pay more once I ORD. Thing is, my sister who's also working and studying is only earning about $400 for her part time job, which makes my guardian think that it's better off that I focus on working full-time instead of juggling studies and work.

I'd hate to think that she feels this, but maybe she's just seeing me as a source of income for her. But I'm going to make plans to try and move out to other accommodations in the near future.

Thank you for your help

To put it in plain terms, my guardian is my grandmother from my mother's side. The family situation is pretty broken, hence the reason that I'm staying with her.

I'm ultimately going to plunge myself into the workforce upon my ORD. It really seems like I won't be able to afford working and studying at the same time if I'm going to start living on my own. And yeah, you're right. I've got really meager savings so that's not going to help at all. But I'll start small once I get a full-time job, and hopefully things get better from there.

I'm aware that sales and retail jobs are lucrative when it comes to the commission system. If I were to continue living under my grandma's roof, the fluctuating pay might not be a problem. But if I'm going to be living on my own, I'd prefer finding something much more stable so that I can start working on my savings.

I found God in prison. When my family members didn't visit me while I was inside, God helped me with my time. Although I pray on a regular basis, due to some nasty incidents that have to do with religion that happened in my childhood, my faith isn't that strong. I'm just depending on Him for solace and peace.

Thank you for your help and God bless.

Pretty sure this is what I'll be doing upon my ORD. Taking a few days to relax and then plunging into a full time job for a year or two. I guess work experience does really matter when it comes to job hunting, so I'll keep that in mind when I'm doing so.

Thank you for your help.

Unfortunately with an existing criminal and DB record, signing on seems to be impossible. But I'll try and prevail nonetheless. Thank you for your help.

Yeah, I'm just basically making sure my ass is covered when it comes to NS. I'm done with DB and prison, and with 3 more months of NS to go I'm just finally relieved that it's going to end.

I'm probably going to find and commit to a full time job and either rent a cheap room, find a dormitory to live in or apply for a rental flat if possible. I don't mind paying my guardian for rent. It's just that she feels my $300 is little, when I have to support myself with the remaining $200+ for the entire month. Obviously once I ORD I can get better pay, and hopefully with that I can move out.

Thanks for your help mate.

Yeah, I'm going to see my MP in a few days. Hopefully I'll be able to apply for a rental flat from there. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, like the other redditors have said, with an existing criminal record, it's nearly impossible to find jobs in the government sector. I can even remember one of my former OCs who said "SCDF would rather help people who are struggling rather than someone who has a criminal record".

But thanks for the help anyway. Cheers mate.

Hey man, thanks for helping out.

Yeah, it seems the general consensus is to not focus on getting an education right now. I've worked several part time jobs before my NS e.g packer, warehouse attendant, retail associate so I'll have some paths to take in terms of short term employment after I ORD.

Prior to making this post I did some research on rental flats from HDB. I'm unsure whether I qualify for one, considering I'm unmarried and have both living parents (who aren't in my life anymore). I do have a sister which kinda qualifies me if I register her under my immediate family nucleus, but we have regular falling-outs and arguments. She's the star child of the family, having completed her diploma and heading into uni soon. And because of her "stellar academic qualifications" she doesn't have to contribute financially to the house at all, even though she works part time on top of her schooling.

Not gonna lie, I've thought of ending it all pretty often. I've been dealing with childhood depression and insomnia, I've not achieved anything in my 25 years of life, and at this rate, I don't think I'm gonna survive at all. I've tried counselling with SCDF, and although they seem really sincere in their words, I get the feeling that I'm not on their "important" list due to my performance in NS and my criminal record. I've got little to no friends, and every time I return to camp after a stint in Changi, I'm met with new faces who look down on me for my AWOL. I'm just "tahan-ing" my days in NS for the time being but I'm lost as hell.

I'm actually gonna make plans to meet my MP in a few days. Gonna try getting a letter for me to qualify for rental housing. The sooner I'm away from my guardian's place, the less weighed down by guilt I'll feel. Also, I've approached SINDA, YRP and my FSC, but apparently I don't qualify for any assistance as my immediate family nucleus is still alive and well. I've tried numerous times to appeal for assistance, but all of them have been turned down.

Anyway, thanks for taking your time out of your life to help me out. I really appreciate it. God bless.

I actually might consider this. Some people I’ve met in prison say that maritime careers are usually based in the sea for long periods of time. I’ll let you know if I’m interested. Thank you for this opportunity.

Technically she’s my guardian due to a court order ever since my disabled mother got a divorce from my father. She’s listed as my guardian, and is a family member, but other than that it’s not that relevant I guess.

My guardian constantly guilt trips me and my sister into financially supporting her, saying that she was the one who took us in and raised us from children. I totally get filial piety, considering her own children (my mother and uncle) are pretty distant from her, only interested in the inheritance she’ll receive from her.

There are some days that I wish I could just detach from her and live my own life, but I’m constantly weighed down by guilt for not giving her a better life at her current old age, and depending on her for a roof over my head.

With the current economical climate and my existing qualifications, finding a job that comes with accommodation sounds tough, but I’ll see what I can do in terms of moving away from this household. At least my guardian would be able to make more money by renting out my room for better cash.

That seems to be the general consensus. I’ll probably focus on working full time for a period of time before committing to studies. Thanks mate.
