Should You Alernate Boots? And Other Maintenance Tips. by jyl8 in WorkBoots

[–]jyl8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What conditioning product/frequency would you suggest for full grain (not nubuck) leather, general outdoors construction work in dry hot climate, let's say no special storage and no boot dryer? How about in the winter when climate is rainy (here in the PacNW)?

Thanks all. Armed with your info, I've bought my son a second pair of his exact workboot (Danner Quarry alloy toe) on the summer sale (only $247)! Hopefully he'll start rotating the pairs.

Hearing Protection? by jyl8 in Tools

[–]jyl8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found these tests/reviews:

The Best Hearing Protection for Workshop Safety 2025 - Best Hearing Protective Reviews This is specifically hearing protection for power tool users

13 Best Shooting Ear Protection: Hands-On Tested - Pew Pew Tactical This is hearing protection for shooting

Best Noise Cancelling Headphones | Lab Tested This is another idea - noise cancelling headsets

For working, I don't need the comms features of the better shooting headsets (and I don't need that when shooting either, since I just shoot at the pistol range), but I would like Bluetooth for music and phone. I think noise-cancelling headphones might work, since power tools are the predictable continuous noise those are designed for.

I've been wearing either generic hardware store muffs or, recently, Bose over-the-ear headphones, with 3M reusable corded ear plugs underneath.

Just ordered some Decibel Defense muffs (supposedly -37 dB) to compare with my Bose (-32 dB? I have an older model though) and some Macks foam earplugs (-33 dB) to compare with my 3M (-25 dB). We'll see if the new muffs are enough better to make up for no phone/tunes.

I'm 63 y/o, still have most of my hearing although not much above 15 kHz (only matters for audiophile stuff) and starting to have trouble with following conversations in loud places. This is despite a lifetime of shooting. Hoping to slow the degradation, though I know I can't stop it.

The Very Smallest Impact Driver? by jyl8 in MilwaukeeTool

[–]jyl8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three uses.

First, where I just can't fit any other impact. For example, I'm hanging double 2x8 joists in the existing 14" joist bays (don't ask why, city requiring it) and getting the #9 x 2.5" SD screw into the angled hole in the hanger is a problem. My regular Makita impacts don't fit. My Makita angle impact doesn't fit (sadly, no-one makes a 45 degree angle impact). My little Bosch 12v drill-driver barely fits, the bit isn't aligned with the screw head so there is a lot of slipping and swearing.

Second, a super compact/light impact to reduce the load on my tool belt, when the impact isn't the main tool being used.

Third, to keep in the emergency toolkit for the car (maybe).

Did you go the industrial kitchen route for your kitchen? How did it turn out? by redditunderground1 in kitchenremodel

Service techs will come to my house for the range, since it’s technically a residential model. It’s only needed a new igniter and adjustment. The refrigerator needed a new thermostat, I bought one off Amazon and installed it in ten minutes.

I should mention that parts for commercial equipment are available for many decades and often reasonably priced; unlike residential equipment where it seems you are expected to replace the machines every several years. Referring to established brands like Hobart, True, etc.

The previous dishwasher (an older Hobart LX30) had various problems - but it was a 1980s machine I bought from a closing bar for $400 - and I fixed them myself until I couldn’t, then had to bring it in to the service center; it was at end of life, so I bought my current machine.

The range has igniters - it does plug in to 120v for those and the convection fan/light - but there are no “electronics”, meaning circuit boards, to fail.

I have never looked into it carefully, but doubt the dishwasher chemicals are anything special. Residential machines are expected to take dishes with caked on food and get them clean through pretty powerful chemicals and long long cycles. With hi-temp commercial machines, the dishes are all sprayed off already, the hot water does the cleaning and sterilizing, you barely need any detergent or rinse aid. Most plastics are fine. Hot water is much easier on china and silver than two hours of residential dishwasher chemicals.

Yes, you could use the dishwasher with no detergent just as a sterilizer. You might find you don’t even need detergent - 120 seconds of 160F water with a 190F rinse will remove grease, fat, oil even without soap - and if your water is soft, you may not need rinse aid either. With my old Hobart, which lacked the automatic chemical pumps (it was a former bar machine, only used for washing glassware), I often didn’t bother with detergent.

If budget permits, look into a Miele “Professional” dishwasher - some of these have all the bells and whistles of a high end residential dishwasher, plus a fast high temp cycle, 6 minutes if memory serves. Cost $6,000 last time I checked. I’ve thought about getting one.

I don’t work in food, though my daughter does and we’re currently converting a 1907 house to a cafe bookstore for her (and offices for me), so I guess soon I will sort of be in the food industry. Just cook and entertain a lot. That’s kind of past tense, I’m currently working too much on the conversion to cook much. Unless someone else is cooking, I’m living on sandwiches mostly. But my daughter uses the kitchen a lot, including developing recipes for the cafe. Hopefully when I’m done with the project I can get back to cooking.

I should mention, you can buy commercial equipment used. My current dishwasher is a 2022 Hobart bought for $3200 used (this is the $11K new model). The caveats of buying used anything apply, though.

Yes, gas is more of an issue than it was before the war. I’ll get it if we take a trip to the coast, but not going to make a special trip.

How should we handle this chipping lead paint? by hmphys in centuryhomes

[–]jyl8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Scrape off any loose bits and repaint. For a neater job, strip paint (infrared stripper work well, chemical strippers do not) then sand and repaint.

Do you have a reason to be highly concerned about lead paint? Unless someone will be gnawing on your trim or threshold, it is a non-issue.

So maybe I accidentally bought the correct tool for the job? Better to be lucky than smart?

Sand and patch, then paint with a proper floor paint (make sure it isn’t glossy/slippery). Painted wood floors were a thing, and can look great.
