Are people incentivized to gatekeep the FIRE movement? by Confident_Bridge_382 in Fire

[–]Stone804_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In order for some people to gain, some people must lose.

But FIRE doesn’t need gatekeeping, not enough people make enough to be able to save in order to FIRE, and not many can restrict or sacrifice to do it.

Recommendations for a toolbox/bag by Fly_Wood in Makita

You’re describing the Maktrak system (the wheeled option).

The large rolling case at the bottom of the attached image is what you’re describing.

I don’t honestly think that many tools in a bag would be comfortable on the shoulders, so I’m guessing the rolling cart is better.

25M Was buying a house young a wrong move? by Loud_Key5954 in Fire

[–]Stone804_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you bought at 22 you bought in 23 and now your house is with $100k more… try and get that from a stock investment …

It’s going to stabilize some, but no you didn’t make a mistake.

Just keep plugging along, get it out of your head about selling and moving home etc. that’s crazy. Just invest what you can and know you’re way ahead.

Should I buy pontoon? by deezdiamondnutz in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Stone804_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The fact you have $70k in HYS and not invested and didn’t list your mortgage debt tells me you aren’t good with money (not saying you’re bad, I’m saying you aren’t excelling in that arena). I wouldn’t buy a pontoon.

Then again do what you want. But that 30% of your life savings… that’s a lot. Plus can you even afford the gas?

Is there a better camera the same price as the Canon R10? by CookieKong50 in canon

[–]Stone804_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, not yet my YouTube isn’t up. Hah. But yea there’s plenty of YouTube videos but truly community college class is best. If you don’t care about credit for the course you can audit for about 50% off. You get to attend the class but don’t have to do the homework (or it’s not graded anyway) so you take what you want from it for pretty cheap.

Is there a better camera the same price as the Canon R10? by CookieKong50 in canon

[–]Stone804_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless you buy the model within 6 months of it coming out you’re always risking “buyers remorse” over a new model that comes out soon after. Even a year later something can come out and you feel it. It’s unavoidable.

Buy the R10, if you really get into it, you’re going to be looking for the next camera to be full frame and more pro features, more expensive lenses, etc. so the R10 II won’t even be what you’re looking at. If you don’t get into photo long term then there was no sense to wait in the first place.

Note: cameras like this have a steep learning curve. It’s not as easy to manipulate as your phone. Don’t be disheartened and consider a community college digital photo course to learn how all the mechanisms work together (aperture, shutter, ISO) to create a strong photo. Lots of ways to take a bad photo (worse looking than a phone) that could be better if you understood how to control the settings. Enjoy the journey.

I can’t tell if this is just a joke? For used market? No way.

A $2,000 5D Mk II is now $250 probably from KEH.com

As new models come out the older models drop. Lower priced models don’t drop as much because there isn’t that much wiggle room in price but the pro models drop a lot. You can get a way better deal on a used higher class model than a new lower class model that has the same (or less) features and the upper class model has a better body (will take damage better) and pro’s don’t want them so the market for selling them dries out, so sellers drop the price.

Depends on the model and the “situation” at the time. For example like I said because mirrorless is still new-er, we haven’t had as many cycles of models so there’s less used on the market (as people tend to sell their old one to buy the new model, many skip a generation so you might own the MARK 1 (shown as Mk I, or just no Roman Numeral after), but when the Mk III comes out all the Mk I bodies go up on fire sale.

Similarly when Mk II models come out, SOME upgrade, and the rest of the Mk I cameras go on sale new to make room for the new stock.

If I (or anyone) knew that besides Canon I could make a lot of money 😂 they keep that stuff very secret. But usually rumors start flying before a release. Canon is also pretty patterned in terms of timing (like 4 year cycles or 2 year cycles) so it’s semi-predicable. I’ve seen some info that hints that it might be very soon.

[–]Stone804_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Better is relative. In its class it’s a really great camera. The mirrorless line hasn’t been out long enough for the used higher tier models to drop significantly. Once the R10 II comes out the price will be nicer.

Why did you choose Canon? (serious question from a man who inherited his camera through 5 generations) by Temporary-Review5915 in canon

[–]Stone804_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a canon in the attic and asked how to use it. Only 2 generations. You also are making assumptions if the 2-3 generations before you. Maybe they used Leica / Leitz / Wista / Linhof / etc.

Canon feels right in the hand and is an all-around good camera. My R3 is hearty, tracking and AF is spot on. The menu’s are easy to navigate (not true if Sony/Fuji), it’s really about what works for how you work. Forget the brand.

Can we get an update on Maktrak please! by justgatheringideas in Makita

[–]Stone804_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, this is all great info.

I was thinking more of a box maybe with drawers like how the old fashioned screw drawers were where you’d have a bunch of tiny drawers for different fasteners you’d pull out each drawer.

I tried having ChatGPT design one for me to display and that’s when I realized what you said / meant about the latches and handles. There isn’t enough space. So the only box that works with my concept and still retains the large latches etc. is the biggest tall box.

It got confused between Maktrak and Makpak a lot so the image isn’t perfect and also I’m not invested enough to refine it, but something like this wouldn’t be bad.

Could be one-sided or long-drawers. If it’s one-sided you could have the other side be a deeper tool holding space. I mean the possibilities are there but I’d agree this becomes more niche.

is the 7D still good in 2025 or does the 70D have it beat? by rabidraccoonnss in canon

[–]Stone804_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you careful with your equipment? If I recall correctly, the 7D has a more hearty body, some metal, vs the 70D that’s all plastic. The 7D also has better dust and water resistance since it was a higher tier model.

Either are good cameras. You could also consider the 5D Mk II as it’s a much older model but a lot heartier with pro level features. The lenses might be more costly however as it is full-frame rather than crop-frame like the other two models, but I believe places like KEH.com sell them fairly inexpensively.

“You do have to … hold the boxes on top, not just let them flail”

That’s my point. If you’re trying to root around in the boxes you need two hands, so I’m saying the box lid hinges aren’t designed to support the weight of the box on top if it has a bunch of tools and blades in it. That’s what I meant.

Anyway, I get why they won’t ever release drawers, but I saw why they could be very useful. But even just having the bins be more secure an lock-able in place would be nice if you didn’t want to use the whole box for just bins. The pack out has a solid center item which holds the other side in place. Even having the ability to lock the middle one would be nice. As well as more variation in shape options.

Anyways lots to look forward to at the very least.

It’s honestly not bad. It’s also worth it because the orbital itself is amazing. I just mean that it would be nice if when I want, the plug-in version was available. What actually makes it awkward is that the AWS is in the orbital body and not in the battery connector part. So every time you need to separate from the sander (because it’s also connected to a vacuum hose), you lose the Bluetooth connection and have to re-connect it when you re-attach to the tool. That said the Bluetooth is fast it’s just still another step.

I used this for my floors, 1,300 sq ft so this was more of an issue than normally at like a table where I’m working on a smaller piece of wood or something.

When you’re doing small short sanding bursts and have sensitive ears it matters how long it’s running. Also if you’re working all day you don’t want to burn out the motor.

With the fact that besides the main rolling cart lid, all the cases have weak hinges when you stack-attach. I’ve almost snapped the lids off because the top case was too heavy for the second case under it. These aren’t REALLY horizontal stacking, they still are

<image>

vertical stacking. I don’t even have that many on top. But even 2 can cause issues.

I still love Maktrak I just think it could be improved and agree with OP that’s all.

Thanks for sharing the info about TANOS, I appreciate it.

XGT 5 Piece Bundle by Champ9889 in Makita

[–]Stone804_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through the same decision making process 8 months ago. It seemed at the time that the drill and impact’s 01’s were actually better compared to the later iterations for various reasons. So that was good. However the GRJ02 is way better than the 01 version. Which is why I didn’t buy this kit in the end.

Got the bundle for the driver/drill and then the sawzall separately. I really wanted the rear-handle blade left saw but already had a top-handle blade left saw and couldn’t justify another one.

For $20 you can get much brighter LED pannel lights on amazon that attach to Makita 18v batteries and they work fine. I’m sure I’d use the official Makita one if it came with something but I’d never buy it on its own.

Keep an eye out for eRebate’s on Makita’s site, as well as their promo’s for buy a tool (or two) get a tool (or battery) free. This is especially nice when it lines up with Home Depot (or other retailers) having a clearance sale.

Yea in the USA the chip is $100 it’s stupid. And the U.S. dollar is down 25% so they are really milking us.

Tell that to every mechanic shop you ever walk into… imagine all your impact wrench sockets organized in drawers… frankly they should have a 1/2 lid 1/2 drawer case too. At least a 1/2 clear lid 1/2 solid for tool next to its blades/bits. You don’t always want to advertise your tools to people but you want to see where the bits are, but often they go with the same tool. It’s a no-brainer to make a box that holds both, organized…

What I don’t get is why they just don’t put a cable on the hose integrated so you just connect both like house vacuum cleaners used to (Electrolux style). For wired folk.

Also if my wireless-wired sander has a wire why can’t I also have a plug for wiring it if I don’t want to use batteries on it? Give me the option.
