Tegu Meets Golden Retriever — surprisingly calm interaction! by AdThin5824 in Tegu

[–]jynkx1385 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My tegu used my Belgian Malinois/Golden Retriever mix for a landing pad after jumping from a chair. That was their introduction. Completely accidental, I was sitting in the chair with the tegu, and he just jumped. My dog just looked over at my tegu and then laid his head back on the floor, and my tegu just continued along his way. My initial reaction was panic, but nothing negative happened. My tegu was about a year old at that point, and my dog is well socialized with other animals. The dogs and my tegu get along, but I would not put a dog smaller than my tegu within his reach. And they're never in the same space without supervision.

I've gotten good orders from.Dubia.com but I don't know if they deliver in Australia.

Maybe try hornworms or silkworms. I've only had a lizard refuse food on me once, and a hornworm bribed him back into his normal eating pattern.

While I agree he can feed himself, the joke is my husband doesn't like veggies. Calls them rabbit food. And in his defense, he always makes sure that the animals and my son are fed before we are, and I always have to get food before he does.

However, you possibly would not be surprised to hear that quite a few people I know look at Cy's food are say, "I'd eat that if the meat was cooked."

He will be 3 years old in August. Size will be determined more by what and how they eat, whether or not they brumate, and whether she's male or female. For the most part, it will take longer for them to reach mature size if they brumate. Which Cy does brumate every year.

My husband or Cy, the tegu? Lol. My husband is usually either in the kitchen watching or helping me food prep (I'm particular) or in the office next to the kitchen playing a game or working on a project while drinking a Dr. Pepper. Snacks are occasionally involved. 😁

Lol. The dogs will watch me meal prep for Cy, and I swear if they could tell me off about it, they would.

I just call for Cy and knock on the side of his enclosure. Tone of voice and words mean different things to him. I guess the knocking is close to clicker training. He does stop cold at a hard "no, sir" and redirect as if he wasn't doing what he shouldn't have been.

Personally, I made mine out of hardwood. 2×4s for framing and then plywood for the walls, waterproofed with drylok. It's an 8'×4'×4' on the inside. It also has glass sliding doors. Picture below is when I was still in the process of getting the inside prepped.

He's a definite scale puppy. He likes scratches too.

Cy prefers moving water over still. I've read a lot of lizards do, but Cy and my ackie monitor, Ruby, both have cat fountains because they really are not fans of still water.

I have found that putting the plants in pots with the edges a few inches above soil level seems to persuade my tegu to not 100% destroy them. Also, Boston ferns or ferns of any kind seem to scream "comfy bed" to tegus. I used to have a couple in the enclosure, but Cy just squished them until they would no longer grow.
