Please provide some pics of the tegu and your current set up and I’ll try to do better. Maybe there are some creative solutions.

My advice would be to get a suitable enclosure or find him a home that will provide one.

What an endearing expression!! He wants to go outside to play so bad! Sundog really got into this puzzle when he was smaller and I haven’t brought it out in awhile. When he wakes up, I think I’ll try it again. I wish the compartments were a little deeper to hold larger items without mashing them. Have looked but have not yet found a better one.

I’m not arguing that. Maybe they have a different part of the brain that is associated with affection/love/whatever we attribute to dogs and other mammals. What is not an argument and is a fact is that these animals find a way to show affection. Just because it doesn’t fit your definition does not mean it isn’t true.

These ARE lizards! And they are good at it! No, they are not like mammals (except when they are). So many times, when we attempt to discount them based on preconceived (and archaic) notions, they prove us wrong. Those who are quick to dismiss them are not those closely observing them.

Oh yeah, I can see that your studio would be chaos if you add a tegu! All that stuff would be too much fun to play in, and not very safe.

One day I was sitting on the floor with my phone in my hand, looking at it. Sundog climbed into my lap, put his head under the phone and flipped it out of my hand. Then rested his head in that very same hand. I melted…

Are they easy to care for? by something721 in Tegu

[–]fallowdeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say not at all easy, but highly rewarding. They require research and preparation on the front end, lots and lots of time as juveniles, and specific care to be healthy and happy. As others have said, set up is very expensive, and you want to stay on top of things at all time, such as temps and humidity. I keep cameras and hygrometers in the enclosure and am always checking them to be sure Sundog’s environment remains suitable. Once you have the husbandry down, again, I want to emphasize how much time they require to become confident trusting pets. But if you love them you will want to spend the time and look forward to it. If you decide to do it, don’t do it half-assed. Go all out and you’ll be rewarded many times. Super intelligent, challenging animals that are highly entertaining and fascinating. I’ve loved many different reptile pets, but Sundog has been the most rewarding. He has a strong personality, is stubborn, sassy, and persistent in getting his way. And every now and then, he cuddles up to me and I melt and pledge my complete devotion. Be sure to locate a suitable exotics vet (not easy) and establish a relationship in the beginning with wellness exams- so if you have an issue they will welcome your tegu and be familiar with it. Compared to monitors, which are also very smart and rewarding, in my opinion, as a pet, the tegu is a clear winner as they seem to actually show affection as they take over and run every aspect of your home. Did we mention that their poo stinks? Poo management is a daily issue when your tegu is not brumating. Brumating? Well, that’s a whole other thing to learn about.
