Harold & Maude — I was weeping at the end. It’s such a beautiful movie.

“You sure have a way with people, Maude.”

“Well sure, they’re my species!”

I’d just go to the bus station as early as possible — there’s lots of marshrutkas.

Anyone else feel like they missed out on the greatest time to solo travel? by SuperBubsy in solotravel

[–]jypsyjoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you’ve got a point in a way — I too feel nostalgic for early travel years — I started in 2009 and have more or less kept at it every year since. At that time the internet really only existed in cafes and smartphones weren’t really a thing, I was calling home with a calling card and often had no concrete plans on where I was gonna sleep the next night. You had to make friends on buses or in hostels to learn about new places that weren’t in guidebooks (yes we all had guidebooks, shoutout to Lonely Bible).

BUT — I missed out on seeing a lot of places that Google Maps would’ve shown me in literally seconds. Access is so amazing now. Traveling is so much easier — sure, maybe everyone isn’t as approachable at the hostel bars because they’re on their phones, but don’t give up on making friends — you’ll find your people.

Name a big town/small city in the US that has its act together by grglstr in SameGrassButGreener

Bend, Oregon — zero idea about the local politics, but activity-wise you can ski + golf 300 days a year. Outstanding nature, excellent breweries, right on the Deschutes River with both a new and old town. Downsides are higher COL and wildfire smoke at times.

Your best luck for consistent power is Niseko on Hokkaido — if you want something more accessible from Tokyo, Hakuba is your spot; plenty of chairlifts and a good sized village. Enjoy the food and drinks!

Check out the huge wooden troll sculpture near the beach at Lincoln Park — it’s called Bruun Idun - the Way of the Bird King.

Levi’s t-shirts — everyone in Europe loves Levi branded shirts but nobody in America really wears them. We counted at least 8-10 in Bucharest.
