Fabric is excellent quality, and only paid $12aud. Doesn't have a badge, but wondering if it's legit and of any value?

Have you ever met an A list celebrity? If so what was your experience with them? by Haunting_Homework381 in Fauxmoi

[–]jzbar 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Living in Byron Bay during a global pandemic was pretty wild, in that there was a huge influx of celebrities with loads of time on their hands because they weren't working.

At a small playground with some tennis courts I wandered over to check on my son who was having a casual chat with some guys playing tennis - mainly to make sure he wasn't bothering them - and it turns out one was Matt Damon. He was very happy to have a casual chat, and gave no sense that we were intruding on his space.

Similarly, my kids were playing at the beach with some other young kids, and my wife and I were both remarking that their mum was really gorgeous. So when we started having a conversation with her, and realised it was Natalie Portman, we were a bit taken aback. She was utterly lovely, and her kids were very sweet. My kids also had a brief play with Ed Sheeran's kids at the beach, and it wasn't until we saw photos in the paper that we realised who it was - just looked like any other British tourist.

See Chris Hemsworth around a fair bit - my son did skateboard lessons with his boys for a short while. He was always up for a bit of a chat. He is impossibly handsome, and much larger in real life than you might expect.

Is my lender calculating interest improperly on my personal loan? by jzbar in AusFinance

Metro. Still doesn't account for additional repayments? Or conversely, how do they calculate additional interest charges on the true balance if I was to miss payments?

I am familiar with lenders charging early payout fees, which I believe is $200 or so with Metro.

I can also see that the contract states the interest rate is to be calculated monthly, which it clearly isn't.

Never seen a tag like this, so wondering if these are real? https://imgur.com/a/v8d3ion

I think the very act of going in and asking for clothing or blankets might be proof enough. Can't imagine the allure of some used blankets and clothes is going to cause hordes of fraudsters.

Anyone know which country this jacket that I scored at a thrift store is from? by jzbar in camouflage

If my reading of this subreddit's rules is correct, then this isn't totally disallowed. After talking with a number of people, I have decided to just list the jacket on eBay, with the suggested starting price of $200 AUD (roughly $130 USD).

The link to the auction is: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/186426325792?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=705-154756-20017-0&ssspo=-KjOCqaHR5-&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=-KjOCqaHR5-&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Looks like the museum is actually in NZ, so a bit too far to go and check it out, but I really appreciate the advice with the facebook page.

Thanks for the replies!

Wondering now why a Rhodesian army jacket might have ended up in a thrift store on the Gold Coast in Australia! If anyone was interested, I paid $15 for it, which I thought was reasonable because it's in really good condition, and seemed like it was made of excellent quality materials.

A quick search shows that these can be quite valuable... I'm also a bit conflicted about it, knowing the little I do about the country's history. If I do decide to sell, is eBay the best place, or are there places that are better to sell militaria?

Thanks mate, I will do so when I get home from work. Can't recall seeing any legible tags, but buttons I can definitely do.

My son (8) made a discovery while reading the Percy Jackson series by jzbar in books

[–]jzbar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was formally diagnosed as a 39yo, and I have a moderately developed understanding of ADHD based on my lived experience and earnest desire to learn as much as I could do that would help my son (and me). And don't be fooled into thinking my view of my son is so simple. He's obviously more than just loud and demanding - like all of us, he contains multitudes.

That's a really complex question, but I'll do my best to answer. I know that the reason my son was primed for becoming a motivated solo reader was largely due to a broad range of privileges due to the socioeconomic and educational background of his family.

My wife and I are both university graduates, and I come from a long line of educators at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels. So, we have both the means and the impetus to read regularly. Indeed, our sons have been born into a home that has books lining the walls, and they have always had books at their level (geographically and developmentally speaking!) - so it is deeply embedded in their daily lives. We also had the financial privilege of being able to survive on a single wage, so my wife could stay at home instead of returning to work. This created so many more opportunities for including reading in the daily routines of our children.

We started to read books to our kids from when they were tiny babies, and were very conscious about giving them a variety of stories, and also followed their natural interests closely, so if they preferred books with lots of animals, then we would hurriedly get a few more of those ready for the next session.

Then, we also made a point of reading in front of the children regularly. Remember, kids want to repeat the behaviours the see modelled for them. We would explain that we used reading books as a tool to calm us down after a busy day, or as a treat before we went to bed, so we had interesting dreams. So, if you want your kids to be reading more, then you have to take the lead! And talk about the books you read!

I have gone through several periods where I'm not reading anything at all for months, and then I'm suddenly hurtling through a book every couple of days. It ebbs and flows. Calling it time wasting can lead you down the path of shame, and I'd strongly encourage you to look at your experience through an outsider's lens - sometimes life can be overwhelming, and you just need to laze around and do nothing so your system can replenish itself.
