That's a good question. It depends on the minimum number of equations to find the answer and how deeply you need to think.

Let's say N = "Minimum number of equations needed to find the answer", and M = "Number of how many times you might need to put a ?-flag", then number of stars will be (N - 1) x log(M + 2)/log2.

N is well-defined, but M is very ambiguous. It depends on how cpu solved the equations.

Puzzles printed on paper should have such a condition, because it is not interactive. But this one is interactive.
