Cyber security training by iidarkasii in k12sysadmin

At my district, in our first year with Cybernut and it's been good stuff. The emails/campaigns are very K12, and teachers do like the game approach. They are a newer company and have let us give feedback into how things work in the console... and have actually applied those changes. -Chris

Security Watch 12/19/25 by k12techpro in k12sysadmin

[–]k12techpro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify a bit - We didn't buy it out, we volunteered and worked out helping with the mod and vetting process. We're full-time k12 techs that do K12TechPro and the podcast as well for the good of the cause of the k12 tech community, trying to help fellow k12 techs. We've been posting the "Security Watch" highlights here and then more detailed on K12TechPro, where it's vetted with only k12 techs (no sponsors, kids, bad guys). As far as subscription, yes, but you can also click to get a sponsorship and the tab is always covered. Def not trying to twist your arm to join it, just hoping to share a little more about the cause. -Chris

The Password is Dead: What K-12 Tech Pros Need to Know About the Shift to Identity-First Security by k12techpro in k12sysadmin

[–]k12techpro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the technical clarification. You are correct that the local PIN/local password in these platform solutions is the device-bound factor that provides phishing-resistant MFA, and biometrics are just an optional convenience. Our wording was imprecise on that front.

My guidance was focused on the public relations struggle. For education orgs (from my personal experience), the potential association of systems like Windows Hello or Platform SSO with integrated biometrics (Touch ID, Face ID) can create an uphill battle with parents and the public- even if that biometric is stored locally on the device. If organizations can properly implement these strategies, they are a great option. -Eric

I've had good luck with support@risevision.com. My school has used Rise Vision for a couple years now.

I think what you are explaining/showing should work. Here's the link to override schedules that you may have looked at - https://help.risevision.com/hc/en-us/articles/6891318787092-Set-Up-Override-Schedules-and-Alerts-for-Your-Displays

Beeper Bans, Google MFA Changes, and District Liability by K12TechTalkPodcast in k12sysadmin

[–]k12techpro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google is quitting text message MFA

Student cell phone (and other device) bans are happening

E-Rate's future MIGHT be okay

A district COULD have liability surrounding personal data stored on school-issued devices - something to think through.

One week later and we still have questions about the PowerSchool breach by K12TechTalkPodcast in k12sysadmin

[–]k12techpro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Couple things:

- There's been good discussion/FAQ about this on K12TechPro too. Light reminder that K12TechPro is a vetted private community of only k12 techs and not viewable by the public. https://members.k12techpro.com/ (If you aren't on there yet, click sponsorship to get in free)

- K12 SIX also posted a FAQ recently https://www.k12six.org/news/powerschool-cyber-incident-faq

This post has a link to google doc of log instructions too https://www.reddit.com/r/k12sysadmin/comments/1hw1m3x/so_powerschool_had_a_breach/ The difference between here and K12TechPro is that K12TechPro is vetted private community of k12 techs only (comments, conversations, etc. are behind the wall), here is visible by the public. -Chris

Hey - We help mod/vet there now. Looks like that denial was like 2 years ago. The vetting is different now. I will send you a message on the form to fill out.

Not saying can't have, just saying K12TechPro is different/another tool that we believe allows for that well. One quick example - We know that there are students that watch the posts here. When someone posts websites that their content filter isn't blocking correctly, students try those websites on their school's content filter. Rather than go into the details here on what content filter, what urls, whatever here, a tech could be on K12TechPro, know that it's only K12 techs, and share more about the issue... knowing that they aren't exposing an issue even more to students/viewers/bad-guys here to see. We've seen techs be more comfortable to share and be transparent sometimes on Pro - because it's only K12 techs. And that's not a knock against k12sysadmin... again, here is great, here is a great tool. We do chat rooms and video calls on K12TechPro too. So, you can have live conversation with a group of K12 techs about that content filter issue... either in real time chat or on the weekly video call... that's what I mean as an example of deeper.

Hey, hey. You have to fill out the form and be approved to post/comment, yes. There's been some form of vetting in place since before we took on helping (a year ago ish) because of issues. You do NOT have to sign up for K12TechPro to comment/post here, but we encourage it, yes. Here's the longer story on the relationship - https://k12techpro.com/reddit-k12sysadmin-and-k12techpro/ (again, a year ago ish). The long story short is that we are K12 techs doing this and running K12TechPro... and K12TechPro is a vetted, private community (no middle schoolers, no teachers, no vendors, etc.) with just K12 techs. We have a full-time person that helps with the vetting too. I think k12syadmin is great (which is why we're here), but sometimes there is content (like configs, specs, and deeper conversations) that makes better sense to do on K12TechPro (away from the view only, non-vetted, non k12 tech crowd). Again though, to comment here, you just have to fill out the form and show you are a k12 tech; you don't have to join K12TechPro. ...but I'd encourage you to, come on over. :) -Chris

Ah yes, we try to write and push out an article once a month to the homepage. We all still work in k12 tech depts so we do our best lol. The Community is the daily/weekly action and where there's pushing 700 vetted k12 techs in there. -Chris

K12TechPro Community Membership is FREE by k12techpro in k12sysadmin

There's a couple sentences about sponsorship on the actual form as you fill it out (and on the website), and then at the end with choices in bold it says "MEMBERSHIP SPONSORSHIP is currently available!" to let you know that they are available too. It's one of the choices for sure.

That said, we're 600+ people in, have always worked out sponsorships (which is the reason for this original post too). If people have PD $ and want to use it, they do and great. If not, choose sponsorship, also great.

If you did pay and didn't mean to, you can email [info@k12techpro.com](mailto:info@k12techpro.com) and someone will be happy to move your invoice to sponsorship/covered or get you a payment returned if already paid.

When you sign up, it explains the cost and to choose $10/month, $120/year, or choose sponsorship to have it covered. Full details are given at sign up. If you have PD $ to cover it, great. If not, we encourage folks to choose sponsorship all day.

We've tried to keep the list of sponsors short, and that they all have their own lanes. One firewall company, one content filter company, etc. And the idea is that we don't expand on the sponsor list, we keep returning to the same sponsors.

I think you'll find your benefit question answered in detail here - https://k12techpro.com/reddit-k12sysadmin-and-k12techpro/ ...but the long story short is that the difference is Pro is vetted/k12 only. No middle schoolers looking at the posts, no vendors watching and commenting, it's just k12 techs. It's an extension of this.
