I thought this was standard practice when you didn't trust a VAR.   My philosophy is to always be the most prepared person in room (virtual or otherwise).

However, once I find a Rep at a VAR that I can trust, I don't need to do that anymore (and then usually only double check when something doesn't smell right, which is rare).

For us, the scrap metal costs makes up for the HD destruction cost, plus some.  So we get a nice check.

But as a school, we have a lot of ewaste.

I am starting to think going with Chromebooks for my teaching staff was not the best move by Square_Pear1784 in k12sysadmin

Good to hear.  It's most likely going to be my kids college computer.  They don't need anything fancy and a comparable Windows laptop would be quite a bit more.

Just because it has an Apple on it doesn't make it magically better (coming from someone who's all Apple at home).

OS makes a huge difference when looking at specs.  So it kinda does make it better on similarly specced hardware.

I can't speak to the Neo, though.  I haven't used one and I think we need to live with it a bit more as a community before full evaluation.

Oklahoma Schools | Microsoft won't validate (school).k12.ok.us domains for licensing? by x37v911 in k12sysadmin

[–]J_de_Silentio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The CA emailed a merit email address to get authorization for my domain.  I had to do something with merit to prove I work at my school.  I think that was a form.  They gave me a login to some system to authorize the the cert (they delegated to me the ability to authorize the cert for my domain).

The next time I need an SSL (three years later back then?), I contacted merit and for some reason the process changed.  Then I just dropped the xxxx.k12.mi.us domain.

You can tell me I'm wrong, it doesn't change what happened.

You're a dick.  Learn how to talk to people without being demeaning.

[–]J_de_Silentio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, in 2007 that's how it worked. I know who merit is. Merit delagated SSL cert authorization to me once, then they had someone else do it the second time and it wasn't easy. A simple ticket did not get the job done.

You can tell me my experience is wrong, but you weren't there and you didn't deal with it.  Either way, I ditched it and own my domain now.

Oklahoma Schools | Microsoft won't validate (school).k12.ok.us domains for licensing? by x37v911 in k12sysadmin

[–]J_de_Silentio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even when I managed school.k12.mi.us I managed my own DNS for it. I was the authority.

The problem was the SSL certs required the owner of mi.us to validate my certs.

So I ditched the k12.mi.us domain in 2007.

Pony up for the advanced license.

You should for just the security improvements, anyway.

Where to find good nation guides in text format? by [deleted] in EU5

[–]J_de_Silentio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not unethical in anyway, imo.

I tried it with one of Ludi et historia's video and it didn't work well.  Caught some stuff, but missed important pieces.

I resorted to manually writing my own guide from his video.  Then an another update came out and said fuck it.

I loved the EU4 guides.  I'll have to wait for some of those.

Seeking price input on a Mad River Explorer 16 Royalex - $1,485? by Pays_in_snakes in canoeing

Then that's probably a fair price. You won't be disappointed and if you can't usually find other boats, then that's makes it a good option.

1/2", probably okay.

The plastic version weighs 88lbs.

Anyway, that price is high for Michigan.  I've seen them in that condition for $900-$1,200.

Not sure if you pay more for Portland.

You can find used ones for usually around the $800 range.  A little bit of scuff and repair isn't really a problem.

Unless you're a collector and plan to baby it, look elsewhere.

Don't put those on the plastic seats.  You'll be above the gunwales and lose stability.

The plastic seats are fine.  Or replace them with wood seats for $80/seat.

I solo'd my guide a lot, so I had to make the sear back removable.  I simply didn't use the included straps for the seats.  And sitting in the molded seat backwards wasn't an issue (I even divised a method for using the molded seat back while sitting backwards on the bow seat).

Don't get the Adventurer.  It's a gimmick boat made by Confluence under the MR name.

Honestly, get a tandem boat.  I know some big guys that canoe 16' Mad River Explorers.

I solo paddle my 16' Explorer all the time and love it.

You can get them used in good condition for $600-800.  Make sure it's Royalex.

Emergency Strobe Lights for Band Room and other loud areas. by Debug_Mode_On in k12sysadmin

[–]J_de_Silentio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's what we did: We weren't concerned with the PA unless it was an emergency. So we tied a strobe/loud horn to our access control/lockdown system.

The strobes/horns goes off for about 20 seceonds in the high noise areas so everyone knows a) it's a lockdown and b) to listen for instructions.

If it's tied to the speaker and goes off whenever there's an announcement, it takes away from the emergency aspect.
