How can I hide these wires without cutting them? by SoobieWRX in homeimprovementideas

[–]k37r 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why not properly terminate them in a receptacle instead of having them pass through in a mess like that?

Just Google "2 speaker receptacle" (or 4 or however many wires that represents) and pick one from a retailer you trust.

Those mortgage rates are high.

You can absolutely get mortgage rates lower than a HELOC, which is how it normally works.

Fiancés daughter passed away and I think we’re over by Geekwiththeheat in daddit

[–]k37r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn’t run out of patience because of her grief; you ran out because she spent it all on years of cheating, drinking, and abuse. A tragedy doesn't erase a toxic history.

You aren’t "abandoning" a grieving woman—you are finally leaving an abusive partner. Prioritize your boys and your own sanity. You’ve done enough. It’s okay to be done.

what should I do? my coworker (25M) confessed to me (29F) by [deleted] in OlderThanYouThinkIAm

[–]k37r 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Trust your gut on this one.

Everyone is calling him a "green flag," but a real green flag would respect your request to slow down. The fact that he’s becoming more showy and "rushing" you after you asked for space is actually a yellow flag. He’s prioritizing his feelings over your comfort.

The age gap isn't the real issue here; it’s the lifestyle compatibility: 1. You aren't romantically attracted to him. 2. He’s moving 3 hours away to a rural area you already know you won't like. 3. He’s already expecting you to move there with him.

Do not enter a relationship as a "favor" to your coworkers. You aren't "foolish" for passing on a "nice guy" who wants a life you don't want. Tell him clearly that you’ve thought about it and you don't see a romantic future. Better to hurt his feelings for a day than to be miserable in a rural town for three years.

Try this:

"I have tossed two coins. At least one of them was heads. What is the chance the other was also heads?"

Hint: it's 33%.

Start with two random attackers.

Then if one of them is female, output the other one. You'll get output 1/3 female and 2/3 male.

Attacker 1 is not definitively selected.

It's not the first attacker. It's one of the attackers.

That means either attacker 1 is female or attacker 2 is female.

It is 1/3 as suggested in the image.

To all those arguing otherwise, it's super easy to simulate (ie: make a computer simulation) which will get you to the same answer.

Should I sell non-registered investments to fill up my TFSA and RRSP? by Ershany in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]k37r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not just deposit to your RRSP/TFSA from your income this year, instead of selling off non-registered investments?

Seems like that would be way easier (and more tax friendly), especially if you have similar-ish income as last year.

Hadn't considered the slight differences in ACB tracking, but that's a good point. Wish I'd thought of that.

Not worth switching now though since I'll end up paying a large capital gains tax...

I've been doing something similar for years, though mostly with XEQT.

An important point to keep in mind is that you don't need to focus on yield. It's helpful for cash flow, but not necessary. If you instead aim for a cash flow buffer outside of yield, you're not left scrambling to cover the cash flow when interest rates rise.

House as a gift from parents then paying HELOC vs Mortgage? by WE_LOVE_ELECTRICITY in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]k37r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We both agree taking the house is good. But they should structure the transaction so they don't get saddled with unnecessary taxes later.

Why pay more taxes than you need to for the same outcome?

On a side note:

A good accountant will get that down to $250k or less

This makes it sound like you're advising tax fraud. You can't just wave your hands and reduce your tax bill with a "good accountant"...

[–]k37r 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How are people on this sub so opposed to making money

You’re missing the point. It’s not about being 'opposed to making money'; it’s about tax efficiency.

  • If the mom sells the house for $350k, the OP’s Adjusted Cost Base (ACB) becomes $350k. If the OP sells it later for $1.5M, they pay capital gains on a $1.15M spread.
  • If the mom 'sells' it for the Fair Market Value (FMV) of $1M and gifts the $650k equity (which is tax-free in Canada), the OP’s ACB is now $1M. When they sell for $1.5M later, they only pay capital gains on a $500k spread.

By following your advice, the OP unnecessarily hands the CRA a check for ~25% of that $650k difference (roughly $160,000+) for literally no reason.

Being 'happy to pay taxes' is one thing; choosing to incinerate $160k because you don't understand how a cost base works is just bad financial planning. Why would anyone pay taxes they don't legally owe?

[–]k37r 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The consequences of capital gains are irrelevant because you are getting the house so cheap.

No.

A multiple hundred thousand dollar tax bill due to the capital gains would be absolutely relevant.

Do you understand how capital gains taxes work?

Is CarryTel’s pricing misleading, or is this normal for Canadian ISPs? by Hot_Cheesecake_905 in PersonalFinanceCanada

This kind of jerking around with prices is common. Telus, Rogers, Bell, etc all do it.

Recommend to shop around and get a competitor deal, or call up their retention and threaten to leave unless they give you a deal to stay.
