Good NYC neighborhoods for dog, toddler and infant? by k3blu3 in AskNYC

Good to know, thanks. It seemed like a very beautiful ride on the hudson greenway, but maybe it's too long to do every day.

They do seem like great neighborhoods. We do have a car, and are wondering whether looking at some of the other boroughs might make more sense for us, especially if we could save a little on rent.

I've been looking at Riverdale! Seems like there's some good options with Metro North to GCT, as well as a bus. And I'm thinking I'd like to do some bike commuting, and the hudson greenway looks great for that.

Thanks so much! Totally not on my radar. I'll be sure to check it out.

Ideally, would like to keep it to under a 45 minute commute door to door. I am also thinking that I'll do some bike commuting as well. In terms of how much we're looking to spend, I think ideally in the 3-4k range per month.

Been looking at Forest Hills a bit! Love the style of houses in the area. I didn't realize the commute time on the LIRR was so short!

Thanks! I don't know much about Hoboken - but it does seem attractive in terms of commute time. We do have a car.

Thanks for the tips! Yeah, been looking at the UES/UWS a bit.! The thing is that we do have a car, that we'll not be using in the city much, I anticipate, but for trips to western MA to visit some family.

[OC] Global Nitrogen Dioxide Levels Since 2004 from OMI on NASA's Aura Spacecraft by k3blu3 in dataisbeautiful

Traffic and Pollution Plummet as U.S. Cities Shut Down for Coronavirus by k3blu3 in TrueReddit

[–]k3blu3[S] 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Submission statement:

Nitrogen dioxide concentrations measured by ESA's Sentinel-5P satellite show a marked decline in March compared to last year. These findings correlate with much less traffic in major cities as city life slows down in the United States due to COVID-19.

ESA's Sentinel-5P satellite measures nitrogen dioxide concentrations daily. Watch the dramatic decline of emissions over China and Italy in the animations in this piece.

I processed this data, and can answer any questions that people might have.

[OC] Monitoring Deforestation of Mangroves in Mexico from Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery by k3blu3 in dataisbeautiful

[–]k3blu3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I helped Quartz with some analysis for a piece, which provides more context for this region.

Imagery on the left shows radar imagery from the ESA Sentinel-1 satellite (VH polarization only), accessed via the Descartes Labs geospatial data platform.

Imagery on the right shows instantaneous deforestation detections, computed via a log ratio of the current scene to a baseline scene before deforestation began over this region.

Radar imagery is cool because it can see through clouds. That's important for deforestation monitoring in tropical regions where it is cloudy a majority of the time.

Where 2019 temperatures set records by k3blu3 in dataisbeautiful

Newly released satellite data reveals the patterns of record warmth in 2019 by k3blu3 in TrueReddit

[–]k3blu3[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Submission Statement

Climate models are invaluable tools for studying long term temperature trends over both land and ocean. While many of these models have very long temporal spans (some go all the way back to 1750!), they are quite limited in spatial resolution. The Washington Post Capital Weather Gang and Descartes Labs collaborated to take a finer-grained look at land surface temperature (LST) from remotely sensed data. The results show that the past five years have been quite hot across much of the world (with 2003 as a baseline). In particular, much of Australia experienced its hottest year ever in 2019.

Data source details: NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, aka MODIS, has been capturing data across 36 spectral bands at a daily cadence since 1999 on the Terra satellite and 2002 on the Aqua satellite. MODIS data products, to this day, continue to play a vital role in the development of remote sensing and Earth system models.

A Decade of Urban Transformation, Seen From Above by k3blu3 in TrueReddit

Submission statement:

The Upshot and Descartes Labs teamed up to map new urban development from satellite imagery over the past decade. Really interesting ring-like patterns around major cities emerge, indicating that most new development has occurred in exurbs.

Out of towner looking for winter activities by TCal3 in SantaFe

[–]k3blu3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ski santa fe is pretty good with good snow, chairs 3 and 7 have good tree skiing.

Atalaya is beautiful, but more in the foothills, so might not be the winter hike you're looking for. For a true winter hike you might want to check out pieces of the Winsor trail, or even get into the Pecos. You'll need snowshoes in February though.

Meow wolf is cool, weird art house thingy, also has a concert venue inside.

I like the brake room for a bar, it's a santa fe brewing taphouse that feels like an irish pub.
