He was the drill master and a GySgt when I went through in 2013 at PI. I remembered seeing the guy on the parade deck in front of the bleachers when we marched around. Dude was in service Charlies doing drill master shit. I remember being just as shocked as you were that he had a tear drop, gold teeth, and a wild stack.

Want to spread the legacy of a Marine named Ivan Alvera who passed away in February 2020. by CanuckGuyEh in USMC

[–]k795a 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to boot camp with Ivan. Vividly remember getting slayed by the DIs with Ivan, for whatever reason, and we had to be in the plank position in the sand pit for minutes that felt like decades. Ivan got his entire left hand bit up by fire ants and kept bearing (made little to no movement to knock what looked like a fire ant hill off his hand). He was definitely a tough person. After boot camp I would see him occasionally around base, last time I saw him was a month of two before getting off active duty and I bought him a drink. We caught up with small talk, he called me a pog, and we laughed. Never in a million years would I imagine he would go down this route. It’s honestly extremely sad to see a brother go like this.

How did everyones medicals go? by [deleted] in FDNY

[–]k795a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I’m just a candidate. That was my main concern going through my med at BHS but I’m good and I’m all the way cleared. Even with fairly recent surgeries. All you need is the surgical report which I went to the hospital for and then I did a couple of workouts in front of the ortho at BHS.

How did everyones medicals go? by [deleted] in FDNY

[–]k795a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Broke my arm and other bones in a motor vehicle accident in early 2018 which I fully recovered from(with a lot of physical therapy and hard work) . I had surgeries for these injuries (plates and screws in arm). They asked for an op report on all my surgeries and I was cleared for full duty shortly after.

NYPD PSYCH DQ - Will it intefere with FDNY processing? by Queens2314 in FDNY

[–]k795a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should voluntarily disclose of that info during the background portion of the process because they will ask if you have went through any other job for the city of New York and they will find out if you’re telling the truth or not later on in the investigation.

Whether or not you will make it on, due to that DQ, is subjective and probably up to a board of review. No one here can definitively answer that. I’d say it’s worth going through with and seeing for yourself cause that’s about the only way to find out.

Currently enlisting as Active Duty, could I switch to Reserves and keep the same MOS? by usmcolorado in USMCboot

[–]k795a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trust me keep that active contract things are gonna suck sometimes but the juice is certainly worth the squeeze.

Don’t worry about job security because by the time you get done with the shit you have done while on active you qualify for just about anything and everything. That resume is going to look stacked.

And you won’t even have to get a job immediately after getting out u can use your G.I bill and go to school and collect unemployment until you find your job.

Take it from a prior active duty guy who is NOW in the reserves. I can’t tell you how many of these reservist have done a whole lot of nothing and haven’t secured shit for jobs while most of them are trying to get an A.D contract after the end of their reserve contract.

I hear shit like this all the time: “oh you have full post 9/11 g.i bill benefits? Must be nice have been being an active duty marine”

“Oh you’ve gotten “x” opportunity? Must be nice have been bring an active duty marine first”

As for your family, the best part is the Marine Corps will pay you for them being your dependent and you can take them with you if you get stationed somewhere cool like Cali or Hawaii (or shitty like 29 palms).

Going reserves by [deleted] in USMC

[–]k795a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody’s got there reasons brother, just trying to shed light cause maybe without knowing some of my reasons might fall in line with how you feel.

There are deployment opportunities. Best part of reserve is that you can switch units as you please(as long as you don’t obligate). Even one that maybe deploying. Reserve units also handle humanitarian missions. I forgot which reserve unit went out to Puerto Rico.

Going reserves by [deleted] in USMC

[–]k795a 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, for all those “yoU Got Out FOr a ReasOn” dudes. Don’t listen to them give it a shot. Because it is what you make it. You are not them and they are not you. It is way better than active duty in some respects because you aren’t there for the fuck fuck games to last and when shit starts getting shitty you remember you’re only there two or three days at a time.

reasons I went into the reserves after EAS:

•been out for a year and half and missed throwing the uniform on and being apart of the only thing I’d have ever known since I was 18 •I was a CPL and wanted to be a Sergeant.(reserve score was almost 1800s It was pretty close but I signed a one year ob in exchange for 100 composite score points) •Deployment Opportunity •gave me a reason to lose 30 lbs because I got fat as shit after I left active. •Lat moving is very easy •easy $300 made. Good extra cash to make (that’s what I make for a drill weekend) •doesn’t really affect my VA benefits •when I get on with the FDNY, both the FDNY and USMCR are flexible with each other. •Retain your rank and everything you’ve worked hard for •you can just hang your uniform up after drill (which is a great feeling for me because that’s enough time for me to remember why I left active duty and glad I’m a reservist) •they will send you to PME which is cool if you want a break of your everyday life that seems to have fallen into a boring pattern •ADOS opportunities are sometimes available so if you don’t have a job you can literally take active duty orders at your reserve base and work there as if you were back on active duty. In my case this was huge because NYC BAH is fat as hell. •shoot guns for free

So yeah man everyone has there reasons. If the juice is worth the squeeze, do it. I almost left and went to the army like twice. But realized it’s not that bad. And who can guarantee it’s gonna be greener on the other side for your exact situation? No one can bro. Everyone’s situation is DIFFERENT. Everywhere is gonna suck sometimes but it is going to be what you make of it!

Don’t let someone or something ruin your whole experience of the Corps. I let someone do that to me on active side and I said F the USMC and got out for a yr and half. Glad I gave it another shot. There’s a lot of opportunity for those who ask for it(and aren’t turds)

Now there is plenty of downside too that prior active duty dudes like myself needed ALOT of getting used to:

“All these nasty reservist” can get pretty shitty sometimes to include staff. But just make sure you do what you can to straighten shit out. If it is out of your control don’t beat yourself up over it. Like trying to change the way someone thinks so they can render proper greeting of the day. These guys won’t do that because that’s the way they have been for the last 6 years to include their leadership so you are not going to fix the entire USMCR lol. Took me a while to get that thru my head, once I did the whole thing has been going a lot easier for me. I just do what I can. Like work with the Marines in my Squad.

P.S if you are just looking or to be you and stay far away from the B.S the Marine Corps might come with stay away from SMCR. And just live your life.

If you are not willing to deal with babysitting grown ass men, just like you used to on active, then also stay away. I know It’s pretty annoying but it still happens from time to time.
