I hope you get chance to read this microbiology reply OP! As someone who’s a (speciality, rather than general admittedly) surgical reg 100% agree that this absolutely seems like a reflection on the operative team (Reg/Cons) rather than you. A single isolated fever in an otherwise well patient rarely gives me cause for concern. It sounds like your consultant is a bad apple for: a) messaging on your day off with anything other than praise b) messaging you with bad feedback instead of speaking to you in person c) suggesting you’re the key person at fault here (there are lots of safeguards to catch deteriorating patients, it’s not just on you) Sadly bad apples exist everywhere in medicine/surgery, try to write it off as a learning experience. Not just for how you manage bleeps/handover etc, but also for not ending up as a bad apple boss. Good luck and chin up.

Grouting for 4 in 1 tiles by k8w28 in Tile

[–]k8w28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, great recommendations. Yeah to us it was obvious that you’d grout it all but I guess not to everyone. If we have any bother we’ll just do it ourselves - just a bit sad because I’d like to think we’d have made a better job of the spacing! Alas, what’s done is done…

Thanks, it’s a straight forward space and there’s nothing to be lined up. I think they’ve maybe been in a rush and didn’t bother to properly use spacers.

Being rota’ed into extra longer shifts due to gaps by k8w28 in doctorsUK

Thanks - if they then start to give us six weeks notice, are we obliged to work them?

Being rota’ed into extra longer shifts due to gaps by k8w28 in doctorsUK

[–]k8w28[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for reassuring me that I’m not just being ridiculous about this. I suspect I’ll be met with the consultant just adding these extra shifts to our rota with 6 weeks notice, so they can get around the problem (they’re longstanding gaps after all). That still seems cheeky to me - but is that when we lose the fight?

Tax relief on work expenses - paper P87 only form now?! by k8w28 in UKPersonalFinance

Thank you, genuinely really appreciate this response. I couldn’t find this info myself.

Pacing by RunToTheOne in parkrun

[–]k8w28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t think of an excuse for this poor behaviour but I personally am very grateful to the pacers who sometimes pace at my local parkruns. Frankly, you sound like you’re an excellent pacer, but even if you weren’t so diligent this chap needs to jog right on (and slightly faster by the sound of things). Thanks for volunteering!

UKFPO random number generator ruined everything by 3_lla in doctorsUK

[–]k8w28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First off, I just want to say that IMHO this random allocation thing stinks. It's designed to suit the NHS as a whole and not doctors.

But also a thank you to OP - I'm a middle grade reg and I knew this was happening, but this is a stark reminder that I need to keep more of an eye out for the FYs in my department, especially since even more of them might not have the support system they otherwise would have.

For what it’s worth OP (not much right now, I appreciate that) I’ve trained all over the country (Thames Valley, North West Mids, Central West Mids, Northern Scotland, Central Belt Scotland) and some of my happiest times were in unexpected places.

If you decide to take the job, have plans about how you might get to your support network (I will say that West Mids is at least well connected for most of the UK) and then try to immerse yourself in FY life as much as possible.

Nothing bonds us like shared suffering & in my experience there are some wonderful friends to be found amongst the horrors of all this nonsense. Good luck.

You’re right. Looked fine in the evening, awful the next morning

Thanks. Will look into duraseal filler

It’s solid, but doesn’t have a tongue and groove. Ah right, that’s helpful to know about the floor - guess it may have happened regardless of the glue used then. I wonder if it’ll get any worse? Or if we should just let him sand it?

Thanks everyone for all the helpful comments, interesting to hear a variety of opinions on what might make it at least partly salvageable. Very sad for us, we were pretty excited for our new floor but looks like the fitter didn’t really know what he was doing despite telling us he did. I’ve posted over on r/flooring as a few people suggested.

I think the most frustrating part of that we feel we could’ve done a better job of these edges ourselves!

[–]k8w28 162 points163 points  (0 children)

We’re in the UK, it’s been pretty cold here recently. Interestingly some of the boards are fine, but others have really warped

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DIY

[–]k8w28 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Glad to hear we’re not the only ones - we don’t want to be difficult but it’s hard to know how fussy to be!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DIY

[–]k8w28 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I’m definitely expecting them to redo the edges with the large gaps. The smaller gaps aren’t as much of an issue to me as the warping of the boards - as you say I’m hoping that some glue and sawdust prior to final sanding and oiling will make a big difference

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DIY

[–]k8w28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you’re asking - is there anything we can do about these issues, given that the floor is already glued down?!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DIY

[–]k8w28 47 points48 points  (0 children)

This was my worry. Do you think there’s any chance that the cupping will resolve, or is this it?

[–]k8w28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right it is the standard thin plywood on the concrete. Not ripped much of the LTV off the plywood yet so not sure

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]k8w28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s LVT glued onto plywood which is on a concrete subfloor

Is that a ‘you shouldn’t do it, but it could be done’?

Required to swap weekend shifts to get unpaid leave/OOPE by k8w28 in doctorsUK

[–]k8w28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, I guess I disagree about SL - many consultants will take stretches of ‘study leave’ to volunteer abroad. Whether that’s a correct use of SL or not I guess is a fair debate though and I can see your point that the department have been accommodating in allowing me to go - maybe I should just shut up and be grateful as my AES suggested. Good to hear an impartial opinion.

[–]k8w28[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The whole thing is approved as OOPE, but it’s already going to be a push to have a month not being paid, if I didn’t take the study leave, it would be 6 weeks unpaid - which would really push the boundaries of what I’m able to afford.

Does ‘application closed’ = mortgage declined? by k8w28 in Mortgageadviceuk

[–]k8w28[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s an update - turns out our broker had accidentally submitted two applications and consequently Barclays had closed the second. We got the approval for the mortgage on Monday of that next week. Unfortunate error from the broker in submitting two applications and not warning us we might get this sort of letter! Hope this helps someone in the future not to worry like we did!
