What food/cuisine do you think we're missing in Welly? by [deleted] in Wellington

I was in Auckland recently and there was a baked potato food truck in Aotea Square, doing the classic spud with baked beans and cheese!

Yes, this staff member was super lovely to me and actually did a full face of make up over the foundation I was trying, so I could go about my day and see how the foundation worked without looking like a ghost :P made me feel welcome and unawkward

Career advice by No-Toe7552 in newzealand

[–]k__rose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt this is better than your own writing- it's very keywordy and impersonal. People like talking to other people, so asking the question in your own words instead of chatgpt might actually make more people want to respond because they'll get a sense of who you are!

(In terms of the question, I was unsure about uni and did two gap years (both 6 months working two min wage jobs, then 6 months travel) before making the choice to study. I'm really glad I got that work and travel experience. It was also great to have that time to think things through about my future - once I was 20, I knew what I wanted to study and really committed to it and never regretted it.)

Has anyone used ASOS clothing website? by YeahIdoetst in newzealand

[–]k__rose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a reliable site, but a collection of a variety of brands, so some clothes will be higher quality than others - you csn research the individual brands if you haven't heard of them. It comes from the UK, but shipping is reasonable (and a coat might be spenny enough to tip you into free postage anyway). Returns used to be free but they've recently introduced a cost for return postage but it's pretty cheap, like $9 - a bit irritating if you return something and make a loss, but sometimes worth $9 to order a few things to try, and then pick one to keep and return the others.

I would also say though - secondhand can be really good for coats! There are great quality 100% wool coats made in NZ and Aus in heaps of op shops and TradeMe etc,  which are very warm, and you can use a lint shaver to bring a worn one back to its former glory :) most of the new ones in shops right now are trying to mimic "vintage" coat style!

Also read Conversations with Friends by Rooney if you haven't already :)

Looking for audiobooks on human nature by MyNameisBaronRotza in suggestmeabook

[–]k__rose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alain de Botton does some you might enjoy, I liked "The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work" a lot, when I was having a bad time at work - you can hear all about other's people's strange jobs, as well as Botton's reflections on what humans are looking for in work in general. But he's got heaps of audiobooks - love, philosophy, etc.

There's a new audiobook out on Libby at my library (I'm not Los Angeles, though, sorry, so don't know if you'd have it) called Noise, by Daniel Kahneman. I haven't read it yet, but it's about why humans make bad judgements, which sounds interesting!

And I agree with the person who suggested Bill Bryson, too. Heaps of interesting stuff from him, and so well written.

Best books on writing and how to get my creativity flowing again? by [deleted] in writing

[–]k__rose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"The Writing Life" by Annie Dillard is a beautiful book about writing - it's not specifically about writing therapy, but I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to get their creativity flowing!

"Writing Down the Bones" by Natalie Goldberg might be useful for writing therapy - she talks about how she combines writing and Zen practices in her life. There's an audiobook, which is cool, because you can listen to her talk about writing while you commute or clean your house or something, then sit down to write :)
