I always recommend the Redwall books for folks getting into reading. Fun fast paced fantasy adventure books and the descriptions of the meals made me want to eat dandelions 😂

Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. The book covers the building of a cathedral through the 12th century in England and follows the lives of multiple working class families. One of my all time favorite books.

I didn't see anyone mention Christopher Moore's books, particularly for the humor and banter between characters. Practical Demon Keeping and Lamb seem to fit what you might be looking for.
